1 Brian and the Gallowfield Ghosts
Chapter 8 Talking Book

2 Miss Smith and Jill took them into a small park behind the church.
A sign at one side of the park said 'Gallowfield Village Green (site of the original gallows)'. "You can sit down and have your packed lunches here", said Miss Smith. They were joined by the American students who had just come out of the village hall. The students told them that Mr Strover had arranged for them to visit Monk House in the afternoon. "What is so special about Monk House?", asked John.

3 "It's haunted by monks", said one of the students
"It's haunted by monks", said one of the students. "The people living there say that they regularly see the monks. It's usually about 7.30pm when they are sitting down to watch something called Coronation Street on TV." "You mean the monks sit down to watch TV?", said Paul. "Your funny", said the student. "No, the monks walk straight across the living room, in front of the TV and then disappear through a wall." "Wow", said John. "It's a pity we can't be there at 7.30." "Can we interview you about your visit later?", asked Claire. The students agreed to be interviewed. After lunch they played a game of football. The students called themselves the Bumble Bees. Brian and his team called themselves the Gallowfield Spirits. The result was Bumble Bees 10, Gallowfield Spirits 0.

4 The class did some filming in the village in the afternoon and returned to the youth hostel to edit their recordings. The Bumble Bees came back later in the afternoon and were interviewed by Brian and his team. "The people who live in the house told us that they had not seen any ghostly monks, but the previous owners had seen them lots of times." "They did say there was one part of the living room, near the TV, that got very cold for no particular reason. Mr Strover said that was a sure sign of ghostly activity." "Why would monks haunt the house?", asked Matthew. "Mr Strover said that the house had been built over the ruins of a monastery and its cemetery", came the reply.
