When Planning to Write: What do you know about the characters? The setting? Whose point of view will the response be in?

6 Narrative Prompt: Kayla has decided to cook dinner for her family, but nothing seems to be going right. Rewrite the following two paragraphs adding details and more descriptive language. Kayla added some freshly chopped onion and green pepper to the jarred sauce and when the water was boiling, she added the pasta. Then, she placed the bread in the oven to warm. In the meantime, she set the table, adding a vase of flowers to the table. Compose your answer in the space provided.

7 A Home-Cooked Meal Disaster
by Sandy Collinger Kayla had always been interested in cooking. As a child, her favorite toy was her Easy Bake Oven, and she often perched on a kitchen stool watching her mother or her father while they cooked. By the age of 13, Kayla had made many parts of meals—such as the appetizer or the dessert—but had never prepared an entire meal herself. She wanted to meet this challenge, and what better audience than her family of four? She approached her mom about taking over the cooking of a weeknight meal on a regular basis.

8 Directions With a partner, read the rest of the story and underline any other details you will need to consider when responding to the prompt.
