6 Today’s Learning Targets:
Participants will: articulate the difference between personalized/competency-based professional learning models and the current ‘seat time’ system; analyze examples of emerging professional learning badging systems; begin to think about ways to move toward a competency-based professional learning system for teachers in your own schools/district/KVEC region

7 Why change? 99% of teachers participate in professional development;
Yet, satisfaction with professional development is much lower than participation: Only 20% of teachers report that they are satisfied with in-service days 72% report that they participate in informal (non- required) professional development including a growing range of on-line resources.

8 Why change? New Research study entitled The Mirage: Confronting the Hard Truth about our Quest for Teacher Professional Development - 3 Major Recommendations

9 REDEFINE what it means to help teachers improve
Define “development” clearly, as observable, measurable progress toward an ambitious standard for teaching and student learning; Give teachers a clear, deep understanding of their own performance and progress; Encourage improvement with meaningful rewards and consequences.

10 REEVALUATE existing programs and supports
Inventory current development efforts Start evaluating the effectiveness of all development activities against the new definition of “development” Explore and test alternative approaches to development Reallocate funding for particular activities based on their impact.

20 Critical Questions for PDCs
How would a shift to competency- based/personalized professional learning cause the role of the PDC to change? What tools and supports will PDCs need to move to such a system? Where will resources for such a shift come from? How can we leverage existing resources in different ways?

21 Where do PDCs go from here?
