2 First Responder Key part of the EMS system
What does EMS stand for? Link between the bystander and more advanced medical help A person trained in emergency care, paid or volunteer who is often summoned to provide initial care in an emergency

4 The Emergency Medical Services System (EMS)
The first responder is part of the EMS In 1973 U.S. Congress enacted the EMS act Multi-tiered nationwide system of emergency health care The DOT National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has set up standards for the EMS system

5 The Chain of Survival “To bring rapid medical care to the victim rather than the victim to medical care”

7 Chain of Survival The Professional Rescuer
More advanced than a lay responder Has medical knowledge and training Athletic trainers Ability to recognize and evaluate emergency situations Activates EMS by calling 911 Provides care until more advanced personnel arrive How are athletic trainers professional rescuers?

Trained to care for more life-threatening conditions then a citizen responder (lay responder) Athletic Trainers

9 Chain of Survival More advanced Out-of-Hospital Emergency Care
EMT’s and/or Paramedics EMT Can provide more advanced care and life support techniques Must complete a state approved training program Most ambulance personnel must have EMT-basic Paramedics Highest trained EMT Can administer medicine and IV fluids Serve as an extension of the E.D. physician

10 Chain of Survival Hospital Care Rehabilitation
Begins when the E.D. staff takes over care EMT may have to decide which hospital to transport victim to A nurse in the ER is typically the first chain of care in the hospital Rehabilitation Goal is to return the victim to the same state of health as before the injury or illness

Caring, professional attitude (bedside manner) Controlling your fears Stressful situations Professional appearance What do you think about this? Staying up to date Athletic Trainers must have CEU’s Staying fit and healthy How many “healthy” EMT’s do we see?

12 The First Responder Responsibilities
Ensure safety of yourself and any bystanders Gain access to the victim Determine any threats to the victim’s life Summon more advanced medical personnel as needed Provide needed care for the victim Assist more advanced personnel Record what you said, heard, did Reassuring the victim and family/friends

13 Review As an athletic trainer you will be put into these situations
Neck injuries, heart attacks, heat illness Learn and prepare for the worst As part of this course you will need to demonstrate your ability to Handle stressful situations Practical exams
