3 Gamelan – background and context
Important part of Indonesian culture Celebrations, dances and puppet shows. 2 types – what are they? Balinese and Javanese “One Single Instrument” = all instruments are equally important – ONE SOUND (very different to a Western orchestra) Gamelan music is played by a percussion orchestra. The word Gamelan means “to hammer”. Music is not written down. Learn music through listening, watching and copying.

12 Texture When all the instruments play together in Gamelan music, it creates a heterophonic texture . Commonly found in Far East music. Interlocking layers = ONE SOUND

13 Texture A single melody line played by 2 or more musicians, with each performer varying the melody slightly (e.g. adding ornamentation).
