1 5.2 Part 2 Heat Transfer

2 Thermal Energy /Heat Heat is the energy transferred through the particles of all objects. the hotter an object is the faster the molecules move.

3 What objects do thermal energy transfer through?
2. If the heat is flowing from Room A to Room B, which room is cooler? 3. Is the question above an example of radiation, conduction or convection? 4. Does hot air rise or sink? 5. What is the definition of conduction?

4 Answer true or false Thermal energy only travels through some objects. 2. Thermal Energy travels from Hot to Cold. 3. Touching a hot pan is an example of heat transfer through convection. 4. The temperature of a cup of coffee decreases because hot moves toward cold. 5. Hot air rises and cold air sinks.

5 TE is transferred from an area of
higher temperature to an area of lower temperature. Hot air or liquid rises, air or liquid sinks

6 Example: 1. Because they are warmer, the particles in the soup are moving faster than the particles in the air. 2. Thermal energy would transfer from the hot soup to the cooler air surrounding it.

7 3. The soup cools and the air warms 4
3. The soup cools and the air warms 4. the two temperatures are getting closer 5. Thermal Equilibrium occurs when the temperature of both objects are equal.

9 Conduction Occurs in solids.
Transfer of thermal energy through touching , contact or collision of particles Thermal energy moves at different rates through different objects.

10 Thermal Conductor a material in which thermal energy moves quickly
Solids, especially metals are better conductors than liquids or gases

11 Thermal Insulator a material in which thermal energy moves slowly
Gases (air) are better insulators than solids or liquids

12 Convection Occurs in liquids and gases
Transfer of thermal energy by the movement of particles, known as a convection current

13 Radiation Transfer of thermal energy from one object to another through electromagnetic waves Can transfer through matter or space, objects do not have to be touching
