Positioning Yourself for Promotion and Tenure at KSU

Goals By the end of this session you will be able to:
List the components of an annual review (ARD, FPA) and the areas of review at KSU Distinguish “Scholarly” from “Scholarship” State your expected review time frame and process Find (if not able to describe) expectations for your next multilevel review at KSU Talk about kennesaw being a comprehensive university find definition of comprehensive at the board of regents Slide about when university rues change, they will change immediately. Department rules will also change but you will have a choice There is now credit toward promotion

New Guidelines New university-wide guidelines for Promotion and Tenure appear in the KSU Faculty Handbook. In particular, note that you will need letters from external reviewers discussing your scholarship (and possibly other areas) when tenure-track/tenured faculty submit a portfolio for promotion and/or tenure. When the department rules change, you will be able to use the old rules for a one year grace period

Types of institutions in the University System of Georgia
Research University Comprehensive University (KSU) State University State College Comprehensive Universities While teaching is a core focus at all USG institutions, the emphasis on basic and applied research is heavier at comprehensive universities than state universities or state colleges, but not emphasized as heavily as research universities. It is expected that institutions within this sector will be committed to being world-class academic institutions. Carnegie classification: R3

How Does KSU Define Scholarship?
“Scholarship describes the tangible outcomes of the scholarly processes.” Disseminated in appropriate professional venues Open to critique & evaluation Quality & Significance are critical Scholarship Can Be Done in Any Performance Area Required in at least one area for tenure College & Department Definitions

Types of Reviews Annual Review Multi-Level Reviews
Instructors: 3rd year progress review toward promotion to assistant professor, 6th year required promotion review, 9th year tenure review Professorial ranks: 3rd year progress review toward tenure, 6th year required tenure review; eligible in 5th year, but discouraged Promotion: Other than Instructor, promotion is always optional.

Tenure-Track Multi-Level Reviews
Pre-Tenure Review: Due in fall of 3rd year Tenure Review Required by 6th year, eligible in 5th year Due in fall of 6th year Promotions (elective in professorial ranks ) Assistant to Associate (minimum 4 years in rank at KSU + must be tenured) Associate to Full (minimum 4 years in rank at KSU + must be tenured) Note: Effective Fall 18, we switch to P&T 4 years from associate to full, it changed Promotionis elective now but it will change we need to say

Credit Toward Promotion & Tenure
May be granted 0-3 years for prior experience Must be in writing in original offer letter One-time use, at the discretion of faculty member (affects only the earliest tenure review date, not the latest/required date).

Post-Tenure Review Five-year cycle after tenure (due fall of 6th year)
Clock is reset by a successful promotion BOR Policy: Administrative Faculty do not undergo PTR.
