ECOSYSTEMS 5.L.4B.1 Analyze and interpret data to explain how organisms obtain their energy and classify organisms as producers, consumers (including herbivore, carnivore, and omnivore), or decomposers (such as fungi and bacteria).
2
ENERGY All organisms need energy to live, grow, and reproduce. This energy is obtained from food. The role an organism serves in an ecosystem can be described by the way in which it gets its energy. Video
3
PRODUCERS Producers Plants are called producers because they are able to use light energy from the sun to produce food (sugar) from carbon dioxide in the air and water.
4
PRODUCERS
5
CONSUMERS Consumers cannot make their own food so they must eat plants and/or other animals. Animals are an example of consumers. There are three main groups of consumers. Herbivores eat only plants. Carnivores eat only animals. Omnivores eat both animals and plants.
6
CONSUMERS
7
DECOMPOSERS Decomposers (including microorganisms, termites, worms, and fungi) that get the energy they need by breaking down dead or decaying matter. These decomposers speed up the decay process that releases nutrients back into the food chain for use by plants.

DECOMPOSERS

Check for understanding
Let’s see if we can categorize the following organisms

YOUR TASK Draw 1 illustration in Docri, find 1 example on the internet, and the import each into your SeaSaw account. PRODUCER CONSUMER DECOMPOSER On the same page, explain why each of your examples are true examples of each of the above.
