Lord of the Flies Chapters 10-12
2
Chapter 10: The Shell and the Glasses
Begins with Ralph and Piggy The only boys left in their tribe now are whom? Piggy, Samneric, and the littluns Ralph and the conch “At length, Ralph got up and went to the conch. He took the shell caressingly with both hands and knelt, leaning against the trunk.” What is Ralph’s reaction when Piggy suggests that Ralph has the conch, is still the chief, and should call an assembly? He laughed “sharply” Why does he react this way? He believes he’s lost the tribe Things have turned downhill incredibly fast He has no power
3
Continue… Simon’s Death What does Ralph say about Simon’s death?
It was “murder” (pg 156) How does Piggy react to this? He tells Ralph to stop talking that way Then tries to convince him it was an accident and Simon asked for it (pg 157) They need to forget about it (157) What does Ralph say (to Piggy) that shows he finally understands what Simon understood – that the evil on the island is within the boys? “I’m frightened. Of us. I want to go home. Oh God, I want to go home.” (157)
4
Continues… Sam and Eric show up (they were getting firewood) and all four boys make it sound like they were not involved in Simon’s death. What do Sam and Eric say? (158) “Fancy meeting you…” “we got lost last night…” “…after the feast.” “We left early….so did we.” Piggy and Ralph say they left early, too. What about the twins’ conditions tells you they were involved with Simon’s death? (158) “Sam touched a scratch on his forehead…” “Eric fingered his split lip.” Why are the four boys acting as if they were not involved in what happened to Simon? They can’t bear to deal with the truth that they have killed one of the boys, on purpose.
5
Jack’s Tribe Where is their camp?
Castle Rock Why would Jack have Wilfred tied up and then beat him, for no reason that anyone can come up with? Possibly a show of power To let out his self-disgust and frustration over Simon’s death What is Jack acting like at this point? A king with servants An idol, a god What words are used to refer to Jack and the boys? Jack = Chief Boys = Savages
6
They begin talking about the events the night before…
What does Jack say about the beast? The beast might try to enter the cave “…remember how he crawled” “he came – disguised…” Does Jack admit to having taken part in Simon’s death or even that Simon was killed? Why would he act this way? No, he doesn’t. “How could we kill it?” He is saying Simon was actually the beast and they hadn’t killed the beast yet. He’s in denial over the truth they murdered someone
7
Jack plans a hunt…but there’s a problem…
What is the problem? They have no fire upon which to cook the pig. How does Jack plan to solve this problem? They will steal some of their fire to start their own Later that evening Jack and two of his hunters raid Ralph’s camp. What have they come for? Do they get what they came for? They came for fire They left with the specs They got the source of fire
8
Chapter 11: Castle Rock Starts with Ralph’s tribe – now feeling very hopeless and defeated – can’t relight their fire without Piggy’s glasses They decide to go to Jack’s camp for Piggy’s glasses What is Piggy carrying? Why? The conch – He believes it will help him at Jack’s end of the island. He still thinks he can reason with Jack and the conch will be respected What happens when they get to Jack’s area? They are halted by Roger who is keeping guard Ralph blows the conch and the others appear (Piggy is afraid) Ralph talked to the group then Jack when he appeared Calls him out for taking Piggy’s glasses and calls Jack a thief Ralph and Jack fight SamnEric are tied up The “savages” throw rocks then Roger leaned on the lever to release the big boulder
9
Continues… What happens to Piggy?
He is killed by the rolling boulder released by Roger (181) What is symbolic about the conch being broken into a “thousand white fragments” and ceasing “to exist”? (181) The last symbol of democracy and civilization is gone – both symbols Piggy and the conch The chapter ends with Ralph running off and Jack demanding SamnEric join his tribe. The last sentences read: “Roger edged past the chief, only just avoiding pushing him with his shoulder. The yelling ceased, and Samneric lay looking up in quiet terror. Roger advanced upon them as one wielding a nameless authority.” What does this mean? What happened?
10
Chapter 12: “Cry of the Hunters”
Ralph is now all alone and on the run. He knows Jack will not just let him get away. He eventually returns to his camp, and as he approaches, two littluns see him. What do they do? Why? They scream and run (184) He looks savage Ralph realizes there is nothing for him there and decides to head back toward Jack’s end of the island. On his way there, he encounters the Lord of the Flies (pig’s skull on a stick – sharpened on both ends) What does Ralph do? He stared at the skull He hit the skull and it bounced back then he wailed on it and it broke apart He took the spear
11
Continues… Ralph tries to figure out why he is in the position he’s now in. He finally decides he has become an outcast for what reason? “Cos I had some sense.” (186) He wanted to keep society civilized, keep the fire, keep rules When he gets to Castle Rock, he sees that Jack’s tribe is having a feast and doing its dance. He finds Sam and Eric keeping guard. They tell him to go away, but he won’t. What do they tell him about Jack’s plans for him? (188) They hate him. They are going to hunt him – spread in a line and search the whole island. Roger sharpened a stick at both ends.
12
Ralph hides for the night…
The next morning, Sam and Eric give up his hiding place. Why? Jack and his tribe were “torturing” them What happens after this? The savages went back to the top of Castle Rock and heaved a boulder down Then they heaved a second one They were outside his hiding spot and he stabbed someone Then the tribe lit a fire to smoke Ralph out Ralph started to run, trying to outrun the line of savages He hid again, was found by a savage, and burst out running straight to the beach
13
The end… What brought the naval officer to the island? (201)
The ship saw the smoke from the island’s fire What is ironic about this? (Remember – ironic means the event is deliberately contrary to one’s expectations) Ralph had been trying to keep smoke going but failed. Jack resisted the smoke but his smoke ended up signaling the ship. What does Ralph do at the end? He cries uncontrollably (202) “for the end of innocence” “the darkness of man’s heart” “the fall through the air of the true, wise friend called Piggy”
