Antisocial personality Disorder

Definition “Is a mental health condition in which a person has a long-term pattern of manipulating, exploiting, or violating the rights of others.” Lack of society morals or legal standards Usually known as psychopaths or sociopaths but they are less extreme serial killers.

Associated Features Good at manipulating people’s emotion
Good at coming up with lies etc to get out of trouble. Poor judgment Don’t care about the safety of others Not show feelings, guilt, remorse

Often break the law To be diagnosed people have to be 18 years old and show signs before the age of 15 Extreme egocentricity and incapacity for love No concern for right or wrong

Etiology Combination of genetic factors and the persons environment
Abnormalities in the brain, defects in the frontal lobe Runs in the family Genetic predisposition (adults) Influence of external factors such as peers or home (juvenile)

Etiology Neuropsychological defects reflected in abnormal patterns of learning and attention Also in the hippocampus it suggest there could be biological defects Parents not getting along after a divorce and parents sending mix messages about what is wrong

Prevalence Common est. lifetime is 45% adult males and 8% in females
Uncontrolled young children are likely to meet diagnostic criteria People under 40 account 66% of U.S population but 83% of violent crimes 1% of prisoners federal and state are over age of 65, 2% of state and 6% of federal prisoners are 55 to 64

Prevalence “experts have concluded that genetics can explain over on half of the gene-environment equation, with one heritability estimate reaching as high as 56%” “Individuals with this disorder range from 40 to 75%”

Treatment Antisocial personality disorder is one of the most difficult to treat People with this disorder do not usually seek help until there in problems and the court has forced them to. Needs long-term care

Treatment Therapy does not actually try to make them feel good but worse about what they did. There is no medication for antisocial disorder People with this disorder may also need treatment for depression and anxiety

Prognosis Symptoms tend to peak during the late teenage years and early 20s they sometimes improve by the age of 40s Change not likely to be rapid Juvenile Not much is known for long-term prospects of individuals
