THE ELEVATOR SPEECH In this presentation you will learn all about the Elevator Speech and how to create your own. At the end of the presentation you will be ready to write your own speech. You will also learn how to present your speech to an audience. At the end of each unit of study, you make a product that shows what you learned. The product for Unit one is call an Elevator speech.

Imagine this… What would you say if you find yourself in an elevator with somebody that you completely admire. You can’t believe your luck!! You have 30 seconds to have a conversation with that person and make an impression…. Take 5 minutes to brainstorm and think about what you would like that person to know. Tell the students that in the next short clip they will be seeing a how-to tutorial. They should write down the tips they are given in the video, and compare them with the slide after the video.

WHAT ADVICE ARE YOU GIVEN IN THE VIDEO
? Use honest statements about yourself. Try to sound natural. This makes the speech easier to deliver. Write down the qualifications that are relevant to the position/role. Describe your value to your audience. What can you offer them? Create a dialogue. Try to invite interest. Ask for permission to send your resume, or phone them. Ask for a business card. Have the students match what they wrote down to this slide.

CLASS DISCUSSION Discuss in class the elements of the good Elevator Speech Skills or ideas Descriptive phrases List of qualifications The students should get together in groups and discuss the elements of a good elevator speech. The class can be divided into 5 groups with each group creating a list of examples from each category. For example, under list of qualifications they may come up with: Youth Group leader, babysitter, can speak English, volunteer at the library, pet-sitter. Practice Honest statements

WHAT’S WRONG? CLASS DISCUSSION
You are now going to watch another movie about the Elevator Speech. This time you have to decide what is right and what is wrong and why. What would you do in the same situations? Ask students to actively listen and take notes. You may suggest making two columns in their notebooks, right / wrong and having them categorize language - both spoken and body language.

ASPIRATIONS/GOALS Now it’s your turn
What kind of Elevator Speech do you want to write? What is relevant about you that would suit the person you are talking to? Try and connect to your audience on a personal level. THINK - PAIR - SHARE In pairs discuss different types of jobs/roles that you have had to do. For example, babysitter. Think about relevant facts about you that helped you get that position. Write your answers in your notebooks.

BODY OF THE SPEECH Relate to a realistic situation and focus on the skills and experience you would bring to it. For example: I grew up in a small town, so I know how important it is to have a strong and supportive community. I look forward to creating that type of environment among my team members if I am chosen to be the team leader. When I was a kid / growing up we / I _______________________ I grew up in ________________________ I look forward to _____________________ I think that ________________________ I believe that _______________________

ORGANIZATION Make sure your speech is clear, concise and well organized. You can use the following words to help you: FOR EXAMPLE: While working at a homework center in the afternoons, I learned a lot about young children. It was during that period when I decided I wanted to become a teacher. While______________________ Since______________________ During_____________________ When_____________________

CLOSING/INVITATION Ask permission to speak to the person at a later time. You may want to appeal to his or her emotions, or address them personally. FOR EXAMPLE: I look forward to speaking to you again about any positions you may have available now.
