What is ‘expression’? Why is it important? What is a script? Why do actors vary their tone? Let’s give it a go!

Can you point me in the right direction to go to the shop? Asked the man. Certainly, said Graham. You just go down there past the bank, turn left, go straight on and the town hall will be on your right hand side. Brilliant, said the man, Thanks for your help. That’s okay, said Graham.

Child 1: No you didn’t! I never got it back off you! Child 2: Yes you did! I’m telling you the truth! Child 1: Ohhh I’m sure! How come I don’t have it now then? Child 2: Well don’t look at me!

In pairs, role play the words “You’re here”. Child A will come and sit on the chair and child B will say “You’re late’ happily, angrily, quietly, mumble, whisper, shout, etc. How does the conversation change?

What would the gopher be saying? How would he be saying it? Let’s have a look…

Blue: Write a dialogue to match the picture. What would the character be saying? Green: Add in speech verbs and speech marks to a conversation. Purple: Add speech verbs and circle speech marks.
