Make the “Magic Window” Foldable
Genetics Vocabulary Make the “Magic Window” Foldable
2
On the front of your foldable – label one long side “genetics” and the other long side “vocabulary – ch. 13.1” Dominant Recessive Genotype Phenotype Homozygous Heterozygous Alleles Gene Gregor Mendel Chromosome
3
Dominant: Recessive: An allele that is always expressed if present. (Example: if one person has a brown eye gene and blue eye gene they will have brown eyes because it is dominant.) An allele that must be in pairs to be expressed. (Example: A person must have two blue eye genes to have blue eyes.)
4
The genetic makeup of an organism.
Genotype- Phenotype – The genetic makeup of an organism. The physical appearance of an organism Example: Heterozygous (Rr) Example: Brown Hair
5
When the alleles are the same. When the alleles are different.
Homozygous – Heterozygous – When the alleles are the same. When the alleles are different. Example: RR rr GG gg Example: Rr Gg Hh
6
Allele – Gene – The different versions of genes. Can be either dominant or recessive. They come in pairs, one from each parent. Part of your DNA which contains instructions for a single trait.
7
Gregor Mendel – The “father of genetics” – a monk who studied pea plants and explained the basics of genetics Chromosome – A threadlike structure, made of DNA, that carries information to control inherited characteristics (Humans have 23 pairs)
8
On the back of your foldable – fill in these terms
Trait Heredity Genetics H h HH Hh hh DNA Protein
9
Trait – Heredity – a characteristic that is given from parents to offspring through reproduction The passing of traits from parents to offspring
10
Genetics – H – The study of inherited characteristics the symbol for a dominant allele
11
h – HH – symbol for a recessive allele Homozygous Dominant
12
Hh – Heterozygous hh – Homozygous Recessive
13
DNA – deoxyribonucleic acid; self-replicating; in chromosomes; carrier of genetic information
Protein – Nitrogen containing organic compounds that genes code for.
14
XX – XY – Human Female sex chromosomes (the last pair) Human Male sex chromosomes (the last pair)
