4 Historical Background, old sport!
During the Great Migration, African Americans had begun to gather from all over the United States to Harlem. Over 100,000 African Americans were living in Harlem, the most concentrated area at the time, allowing Harlem it to be dubbed as the “Black Capital” of America. Luma

This movement brought up huge issues in the lives of African Americans through art forms including music, drama, painting, sculpture, movies, but mainly literature. 10 Apparent pushbacks against the Renaissance in the Book
Page 12, Tom talks about “The Rise of the Colored Empires” by Goddard. The real book is called the Rising Tide of color by Lothrop Stoddard, who was a “scientist” that proved white superiority and warned the world of the colored threat. Irony on page 12, Tom justifies white superiority by stating that they “produced all things that go to make a civilization, oh science and art, and all that” On page 69, after Nick and Gatsby cross the bridge and pass by Blackwell’s island, Nick sees “modish negroes” in a limousine. He says “anything can happen now that we’ve slid over this bridge”. Old Sport Old Sport Rani

11 The “Fashion” Change Of The Harlem Renaissance
During the Harlem Renaissance one of the changes that occurred was the change in fashion. In the 1920’s the fashion trends took a shift to having more freedom with what to wear. Women shifted from their corsets and long dresses for shapeless, shift dresses that allowed them to dance and move freely; and the trendy women were known as “Flappers”. They dressed in colorful shift dresses with silk stockings and silk underwear. Bob (short and even) haircuts, bare arms, flat chests, and long cigarette holders. This era redefined womanhood and bridged the gap between rich and middle class women. Old Sport
