1 A SC: T explains the aims of the unit- understanding the generation of electricity T asks ss to recall prior knowledge of energy forms and energy conversion MD: T shows the model of generator T provides the model of generator and asks ss to find out how it works T organized as cause and effect, thus ensuring students see some language patterns for expressing cause and effect GC: T asks SS to work in small group to describe the energy change with the use of a worksheet (with word equation) IC: SS in their small group using full sentences to report their answer to the class

2 A What energy change is taking place in the light bulb?
Electrical energy  light energy Electrical energy is changed to light energy in the light bulb. What energy change is taking place in the motor? Electrical energy  __________________ _________________________________________________ What energy change is taking place in the generator? _________________ ___________________

3 B SC and MD: T introduces the different components of the steam engine unit T demonstrate how the steam engine unit works T asks the following questions: What happens to the wheel? (The wheel turns) What kind of energy does the turning wheel have? (kinetic energy) What makes the wheel turn? (Steam) Where does the steam come from? (Boiling of water) What kind of energy makes the water boil? (Heat energy) Where does the heat energy come from? (Burning of fuel) What is the fuel that we use today? (Alcohol) What kind of energy is stored in alcohol? (chemical energy) Apart from the turning of the wheel, what else can you observe? (The light bulb lights up) What kind of energy makes the bulb light up? (electrical energy) where does the electrical energy come from? (generator) What are the energy conversions in the generator? (kinetic energy  electrical energy) GC: T guides SS to complete the flow chart which shows steps involved in electricity generation IC: SS finish the activity and share their findings with the class

5 Alcohol is burnt to give out _______.
___________________________________________ _______________________________________________ What kind of energy is given out when alcohol is burnt? What is the produced heat used for? What is the produced steam used for? 4. What is the turning wheel used for? heat The heat produced boils cold water to steam. The steam produced drives the wheel. The turning wheel drives the generator to generate electricity.

6 Alcohol is burnt to give out _______.
Energy Change Alcohol is burnt to give out _______. The _____ produced boils cold water to ________. The _______ produced _______ _____ __________. ________________________________________________________. _________ energy ____________ _____________ Chemical heat _____________ heat steam steam drives the wheel The turning wheel drives the generator to generate electricity

The _______ produced _______ _____ __________. ________________________________________________________. _________ energy ______ energy ________ energy Chemical heat Heat heat steam Kinetic steam drives the wheel Kinetic The turning wheel drives the generator to generate electricity Electrical

8 C SC: T asks the SS what the similarities and differences are between the model and the power station (with the use of a worksheet) MD: T presents the full diagram of electricity generation in a power station GC: T guides SS to complete the flow chart which shows steps involved in electricity generation in power station IC: SS finish the activity and share their findings with the class

10 Steam engine unit Power station Fuel Alcohol Coal Component 1 Wheel Turbine Component 2 Generator Outcome Generated electricity is transmitted through wire to the light bulb through power cable to buildings

11 In the Power Station How can the coal be easier to burn?
2. What kind of energy is given out when coal powder is burnt? 3. What is the produced heat used for? 4. What is the produced steam used for? 5. What is the turning turbine used for? Coal is broken into very fine coal powder. Coal powder is burnt to give out _______. The _____ produced boils cold water to ________. The _______ produced _______ _____ __________. ________________________________________________________.

15 D SC: MD: GC: IC: T introduces the genre, temporal explanation .
T explains the structure of a temporal explanation and its language features (e.g. present tense, orientations, active and passive voice, nominalization as orientation) GC: T and SS work out the steps of electricity generation using diagrams with arrows to show the flow. And, as the visual is drawn, the T and SS co-construct what is going on and write it at the appropriate place in the visual. The SS write on their worksheets what the teacher is writing on the board. IC: SS, in pairs, write a temporal explanation of the generation of electricity
