4 What is Composting? When we break down organic, or once living material, faster than it would in nature. Creates a chocolate colored dirt that gives plants nutrients “Decomposers” in the soil like micro-organisms, organisms, and worms break down organics. They are nature’s recyclers.

6 What Happens to Collected Organics?
Organics are taken to local facilities to make compost or to make energy Newtown Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant in Brooklyn DSNY Commercial Composting Facility

7 Please Bring ALL Food Scraps, Food Soiled Paper, Recycling, and Trash to the Sorting Station
Take your items off your tray one at a time.

8 Sort it Out. It’s Easy. Recycle Cartons, cans, bottles, & all hard plastics Remove Landfill trash Pour Any liquids into bucket Add ALL food scraps food soiled paper

9 Take food OUT OF Plastic baggies Plastic wrap and Tin Foil
BEFORE YOU PLACE IT in the FOOD SCRAPS BIN

10 Sorting in Four Easy Steps
Step 1: Pour Liquids into Bucket Step 2: Recycle Cartons, Cans, Bottles, Foil, and Hard Plastics Step 3: Remove Trash Plastic Bags, Film, Wrappers, and Foam Step 4: Add Organics Food Scraps Fiber Trays Paper Boats, Cups Plates and Napkins

11 Remember to Recycle All Beverage Cartons, Cans and Bottles
And aluminum foil

12 Recycle All Hard Plastics
HINT: If you can squeeze it into a ball, it is NOT a hard plastic

13 Remove Trash and put into Landfill Bin

14 Add ALL Leftover Food Scraps to the Organics Bin

15 Add All Food Soiled Paper and Fiber Trays to the Organics Bin
