Compiled by the Northwest Montana Educational Cooperative to aid in teaching the Montana Common Core Standards (MCCS) and Indian Education for All (IEFA).

B is for Bold Print- words with thick heavy lines. Bold Not Bold

Captions- C is for Information that is near a photograph or

D is for Diagrams- is a drawing of something to show its parts. Labels are often added to the diagram. Image from Google.

Endpages- E is for additional information that supports the book.

F is for Fonts- The way the typing looks. You will find words in bold and color print in books. Traditional Literature poster is a genre poster from Beth Newingham’s classroom website. The Story of Grizzly Bear Looking Up has been added for a MT traditional piece of literature from the Flathead Reservation.

Glossary- G is for An alphabetized list of special words in a
book and their meanings. Glossary pulled from the back of Jingle Dancer.

Headings- H is for The title, subtitle, or topic that
stands at the top or beginning, as of a paragraph, letter, or chapter. Taken from the Native American Literature Series.

Index- I is for An alphabetized list of key information including
page numbers. This can be found at the end of a book. Taken from the Native American Literature Series.

J is for Just say it! A pronunciation guide is when the writer spells out the words phonetically, often in parentheses. This helps us say the word correctly. SIQUON (SEE’ KON) “Spring” This word is from When the Shadbush Blooms. It is from the Lenni Lenape Culture.

K is for Map Key- Helps the reader know how to interpret

Labels- L is for Helps the reader identify parts of a diagram.

M is for Map- Helps the reader understand where things are in the world.

Noticeable Text Features
N is for Noticeable Text Features Helps readers better understand what they are reading about. Gives us extra information. Text features can be found in textbooks, magazine articles, reports, web pages, and other forms of text.

Reference pages- R is for Helps the reader understand information

Sidebars- S is for Boxes of information to the side of the

Table of T is for Contents- Helps the reader identify
key topics in the book in the order they are presented. Take from The Dance House.

U is for Underline-Helps the reader understand that the words are a part of a website link. Underlining can also denote words of importance or in some cases titles of books. Link to The Rez We Live On by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes.

V is for Verso Pages-In page layout, the verso pages are the even-numbered pages on the left side of a two-page spread. Unknown original source.

X is for AppendiX-Additional information located at the end of a book.
