Arthropods

Vocabulary Arthropods – Invertebrate Animal with an exoskeleton, a segmented body, and jointed appendages. Appendages – An external body part. (Legs,Antennae,Claws,Pincers). They are adapted for moving, capturing prey, feeding, mating, and for sensing the environment Exoskeleton - The hard, outer covering of an arthropod's body.

Vocabulary Molting – When an arthropod's exoskeleton sheds and is replaced by a new one. Spiracles – Openings insects have where air enters and waste gasses leave the insect's body. Metamorphosis – The series of changes an insect goes through. (Bee's Metamorphosis from an egg to larva to pupa to an adult bee)

Key Facts There are more than a million different species of Arthropods Most Arthropods species have separate sexes and reproduce sexually They vary from sizes of a dust mite to a large Japanese Spider Crabs Some Arthropods have many segments, but others have segments that are fused together

Key Facts The abdomen has neither wings nor legs but if is where the reproductive structures are found, females lay thousands of eggs, but only a fraction of the egg develop into adults They feed on plants, the blood of animals, nectar, decaying materials, wooden houses, and clothes Because of their tough, flexible, and waterproof exoskeletons, they have the ability to fly and have rapid reproductive cycles

Key Facts Arachnids are an example of Arthropods.
Spiders, scorpions, mites, and ticks are examples of arachnids. They have two body regions, a head chest region called cephalothorax and an abdomen They have four pair of legs but no antennae Many arachnids are adapted to kill prey with venom glands, stingers, or fangs. Others are parasites

Origin Since earthworms and leeches wave individual body segments. Scientists hypothesize that arthropods probably evolved from an ancestor of a segmented worm. Over time groups of body segments fuse and became adapted for locomotion, feeding, and sensing the environment The hard exoskeleton and walking legs allow Arthropods to be among the first successful land animal.

Pictures Metamorphosis - The series of changes an insect goes through.
Butterflies undergo Metamorphosis. ( Starting as an egg and up into an adult.)

Pictures They vary from sizes of a dust mite to a large Japanese Spider Crabs
