2. French and Indian War
As the colonies expanded tension rose with France over who controlled the land west of the Appalachian Mountains. Both sides wanted this land for the fur trade and future settlement.

3. In 1754, colonial militia (led by George Washington) fought with French soldiers in the Ohio River Valley. Both England and France send soldiers to fight in the colonies.

4. The fighting between the British and their colonists and the French and their native allies rages primarily in the western and northern areas of the colonies and will last about six years.

5. 1763, the Treaty of Paris of 1763 ends the war and England is given control of all French land east of the Mississippi River.

6. Even though England won they needed to find a way to recoup the cost of the war. The British Parliament needed to raise taxes but many in England did not want to pay for a war that did not benefit them.
