2. What is DSS-G?
DSS-G integrates many components, but has No storage controller!

DSS-G integrates Servers, Networking, Storage and Software.
The (2) Server Nodes require RHEL OS and Lenovo Enterprise Server Software Support in the configuration.
The current release supports a variety of networking, which allows customers to use existing switches or new switches purchased separately.
Supported networking includes 10GbE, 40GbE, FDR Infiniband, EDR Infiniband, and OPA with 25GbE and 100GbE supported soon.
DSS-G supports a wide variety of storage options to meet customer needs as shown on the screen.
DSS-G also supports, (2) 400GB SSD “internal use” drives for metadata & Recovery logs in enclosure #1 only.
Other than the two flash drives for metadata in the first JBOD, all the drives in each JBOD have to be the same.
And like GSS – the predecessor to DSS - DSS-G has no storage controller and is a complete solution based on software defined storage.

All base configurations include two x 3650 M5 HPIO systems.
If a user is only ordering a single DSS building block the configurator will include an optional x3550 M5 for a quorum / xCat server.
The software includes Redhat Enterprise Linux and IBM Spectrum Scale RAID or DATA Management

4. What does DSS have that GSS does not?
A family of offerings based on Lenovo organic storage
The first Distributed Storage Solution to announce on April 11 is:

GSS is a stand alone solution. DSS will be a family of solutions.
DSS-G will announce first and address the market for IBM Spectrum Scale
DSS-C will be available soon after DSS-G and address the market for CEPH in context of SAP HANA
DSA-L is planned to address the market for clients requiring Intel Lustre – no target date as yet – but look for 3Q / 4Q time frame
DSS will use Lenovo storage – specifically the D3284 and D1224.
Today we can build with 2, 4 or 6 D3284 JBODs or 1, 2, 4 or 6 D1224 JBODs.
Unlike GSS in future DSS releases you will be able to build the solution in increments of 1 JBOD up to a max of 6. (we should announce up to 8 JBOD capability later in the year)
Also in a future release we will be able to intermix the JBODs as long as we have consistent drive capacities in each D3284 and consistent drive capacities in each D1224.

8. x-config – New Cluster
Hover over an open slot in the Rack to add an item, press the add button, select ‘Distributed storage solution’
Ignore the Red warnings, this is working as designed for the DSS offering

From Base Item drop down, select ‘Lenovo Distributed Storage Solution for IBM Spectrum Scale’
On Standard Features tab
Select memory required
Select Network adapter required
Select Storage JBOD enclosure with the selected drive type required
Select Storage JBOD enclosure quantity (some qty’s may not be selectable due to previous selections)
Select Spectrum Scale Software and Service term (not shown in screen shot)
After making selections, choose ‘Save’

10. x-config – Empty Rack Removal
There will be an empty Rack in the configuration, which needs to be removed prior to saving and submitting for order
Right-click on ‘Rack_1’
Choose ‘Remove rack’

11. x-config – Server Customization
You can make some customization changes to the x3650 M5 servers in the configuration
In this example I added in a Secondary array, RAID 5 with 3 SSD’s
Some options are part of the base DSS offering and cannot be changed or removed (like CPU)
The DSS Server Software selection was made during initial configuration, but the QTY is set automatically and shouldn’t be changed (in this example, qty is 83)

12. x-config – Export & Save
After making any customization changes, the configuration/solution is ready for Export
Make sure to run manufacturing validation (checked by default)
Export the XLS and XML too
The auto-added Professional Service, QTY 3, can be found on the Non-racked items tab
It is recommended to include Professional Services, but they could be removed or additional days added
Ignore the Red warning messages
The configuration/solution should pass manufacturing validation and be ready for pricing and ordering
