Are the Odds in Your Favor?
Information about Gambling: A Financial Literacy Lesson
3
Guiding Questions for the lesson:
What are the odds of winning at games of chance? What impact does gambling have on people and society?
4
The Eleven Game Rules: 1. This is a dice game where the ONLY roll that counts is 11. 2. When all three dice are rolled and their total equals, those 11 points are counted. 3. The first person to reach 99 is declared the winner. 4. The scorekeeper will keep the score for each player. 5. The scorekeeper will also tally, or count, the total number of times EACH player rolls the dice.
5
The Eleven Game Scoring:
Total the number of times EACH player rolled the dice, regardless of whether they won the roll. Next, record the number of times EACH player scored the winning number 11. Write the ratio of the winning rolls to the total number of rolls for each player. The winning number of rolls is the numerator; the total number of rolls is the denominator. For example: The winner will automatically have 9 as their top number of winning rolls (to reach 99). Let's say they had 9 winning rolls out of a total of 15 rolls. The ratio would be 9/15 (reduced down to 3/5). Change each ratio to a percentage. For example, the fraction of 3/5 would be 60%.
6
What were the percentage scores in this game?
Winners’ Percentages Losers’ Percentages
7
Discuss with your group:
In looking at the list of winners' percentages, what is the median (most frequent) percentage? In looking at the list of losers' percentages, what is the median percentage? Gambling is placing money primarily on games of chance. If you were to gamble on a game, what percentage or odds would you want in your favor? 50/50? 60/40? Higher? Looking at the odds (percentages) on the board, would you "gamble" (place any money) on your chances of winning this game? Why or why not? What about other games of chance? Would you be willing to gamble on a winning lottery ticket? A horse race? The outcome of a football game before it happens? Why or why not?

Stop ‘n Jot Reading Activity:
Read the article one or two paragraphs at a time. In the margin of your reading, write a few important phrases or ideas about what you just read. Continue reading in this manner, making notes in the margin.
9
PROs and CONs of Gambling
Fold your notebook paper lengthwise (hot dog style). Title one column “Benefits or Pros” and one column as “Consequences or Cons.” As you listen to the story of one person’s gambling addiction, write down any benefits (Pros) you hear about gambling and any consequences (Cons) of gambling.

What impact does gambling have on people and society?
PSA Poster You are to create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) poster that talks about problems with gambling. Your groups should answer the guiding question on your poster: What impact does gambling have on people and society? Use the rubric to complete your poster.
