Cycle Safety
2
Why should we cycle to school ?
Cycling to school is a great way to get fit and reduce congestion and pollution. If more pupils cycle, this means fewer cars on the road, which is safer for us all.
3
WHY SHOULD YOU WEAR A HELMET ?
Cycling can be a lot of fun but accidents can happen. AROUND 100,000 CHILDREN HAVE TO GO TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT BECAUSE OF THEIR INJURIES. AROUND 10,000 HAVE INJURIES THAT REQUIRE A FEW DAYS IN HOSPITAL.

Useful equipment for cycling
While you are cycling you need to have pieces of equipment. You need a cycling headlight TO BE ABLE TO SEE AT NIGHT. YOU COULD HAVE A BOTTLE OF WATER TO KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED. YOU NEED STABILISERS IF YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW TO RIDE A BIKE PROPERLY.
5
Road safety Road safety is very important.
Over 500 children die on the road. High visibility jackets are useful at night when you are cycling. People can then see you on the road at all times . you have got to know the rules of the road. For example, traffic lights have coloured symbols to know when to stop and when to go. Red means stop ; yellow means amber [get ready] ; and green means go. Lollypop ladies or men hold a sign for cars to stop so that children who are going to school can cross the road safely.
6
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE WITH AN ADULT WHEN YOU ARE CROSSING THE ROAD
YOU SHOULD ALWAYS BE WITH AN ADULT WHEN YOU ARE CROSSING THE ROAD. TIP: WHEN YOU ARE ABOUT TO CROSS THE ROAD, LOOK in ALL DIRECTIONS TO check IF ANY CARS ARE COMING.

We, as the school council, have noticed children coming into school with bikes – or scooters – without a helmet. We want to introduce a cycle contract so that you wouldn’t be allowed to come to school on your bike unless you are wearing a bicycle helmet. More information on this will be sent out after half term. You also need a bike lock to keep your bike secure. The school council have worked hard, so please listen to the important information about wearing a helmet.
9
This is what would happen if you do not wear a helmet on your bike.
10
Please remember to wear a helmet - no matter how excited you are to go out on your bike.
