Introduction to Literary Elements
Creative Writing Mr. Way 10/25/13
2
SWBAT Define several key literary elements
Describe how each can be useful
3
Symbol When an object or action has a deeper meaning than what is literally stated. Ex. “A new dawn” could be used to symbolize a turning point in a character’s life. Gives layered meaning to scenery descriptions to reveal character or set mood better.
4
Analogy / Metaphor When you compare a well-understood concept to an unknown concept to explain it. Example: “She was an angel of mercy to the homeless vagrants of Watts.” Allows quick descriptions of complex ideas.
5
Allusion Very similar to metaphor, but referring to a specific person, event, or literary work. Ex. Eminem is a modern-day Shakespeare (according to himself). Allows quick descriptions of complex ideas, but relies on reader to know who/what you’re referencing.
6
Foreshadowing Something in the story that hints at what is going to happen later on. Ex. Early in a book, protagonist notices a starving cat wearing a collar and wonders why the owner isn’t feeding it. Later in the book, the protagonist’s caretaker dies, so he ends up on the street, starving like the cat was. Useful for developing character and simultaneously setting up action for later.
7
Personification When you describe something that isn’t a person as if it were. Ex. “On the day of my mother’s passing, even the sky wept.” Helps to establish mood. Gives the narrator’s perspective about whatever thing is described.
8
Conclusion There are many types of literary elements
Literary elements can be used to enhance the your storytelling by Providing layered meaning Establishing mood and theme Allowing for quick, powerful descriptions that let you get back to describing action faster.
