Using a Dictionary What is a dictionary? Why would I use a dictionary?
A dictionary is a book that contains words and their meanings. The words appear in alphabetical order. Why would I use a dictionary? To look up the meaning of a new word, to find out how to say a word, or to check a word’s spelling. When is a dictionary useful? A dictionary is useful when reading and writing.

Vocabulary darted ((verb) – to move quickly and suddenly.
exploded (verb) – to burst out suddenly and with noise. grumble (noun) - a low, rumbling sound muttered in complaint. languages (noun) – words used by a certain group to speak and write. mumbled (verb) – to speak unclearly with the lips partly closed. streak (noun) – a rapid movement. stubborn (adjective) - not easily persuaded or convinced.

Writing Prompt Pre-write a list of things that happened that you could write about. Write a journal entry about something that happened on one day in the past week. Describe the events in sequence. Use colorful words and try to show your thoughts or feelings.

Day 2 - Genre Realistic Fiction
Realistic fiction tells about characters and events that are like people and events in real life. Problems that could happen in real life but didn’t.

Good listeners Give the speaker your full attention Try not to cough or hiccup while someone is speaking Respect the reader and your classmates by not laughing or speaking if a mistake is made Good speakers Speak loudly and clearly Look up when you are reading not into your lap

Making Connections How does Pepita learn she has a valuable gift?
What do the other characters think about Pepita’s ability to speak two languages? How do you know? Why is it difficult for a person to change something about themselves? Do the characters and events in this story seem real to you? What do you think Pepita will do the next time someone asks her to talk for them in Spanish and in English?

Contrasting tells how two or more things are different Officer Buckle has a partner with special abilities, but Pepita has her own special abilities.

Synonyms Synonyms mean almost the same thing.
Always stick with your buddy. Never desert your pal. Antonyms mean the opposite. I want a hot drink of cider. I want a cold drink of cider.
