Chapter 7; Section 1: Early Japanese Society- The Ainu ● The Ainu = first culture in Japan; they looked different and spoke differently. ● They fought with people, and lost their land. ● Later, they were driven back onto the single island, Hokkaido. ● Over time, the Ainu culture slowly began to vanish, as many people adopted new customs. (STUDENTS SHOULD WRITE DOWN THE FIRST BULLET)

(STUDENTS SHOULD WRITE THE FIRST AND THE LAST BULLET) ● The Japanese lived mostly in small farming villages, that were ruled by powerful clans. ● clans were extended families who were highly respected, and had a chief, who had both political power and religious duties. ● Clan chiefs believed that they were descended from natures spirits, KAMI. ● The rituals of these chiefs = the traditional religion of Japan, Shinto.

● Some clans = larger and had more power. ● The Yamato rulers ruled clans before claiming to be the emperors of all Japan (very important) *wink wink* ● The Yamato rulers extended control over Honshu, and began to call themselves the emperors of all Japan.
