1 WHAT’s THE SCIENCE BEHIND CLIMATE CHANGE?

2 Climate? OR Weather? WEATHER- over a short period of time ; “what’s happening outside today” Raining? Snowing? Cold? Hot? Humid? CLIMATE- global average; Patterns/trends over relatively long periods of time VIDEO Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) Feb 26 , 2015 Former Chairman of Senate ENVIRONMENT and Pubic Works Committee

4 It makes life on Earth possible!
GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, including water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, trap heat energy keeping Earth’s surface and lower atmosphere warm THIS IS A GOOD THING! It makes life on Earth possible!

5 PROBLEM Greenhouse gases have been increasing So
PROBLEM Greenhouse gases have been increasing So atmosphere is trapping more heat and planet is warming up

6 WHAT DOES THE SCIENCE SAY?

7 CARBON DIOXIDE LEVELS IN ATMOSPHERE ARE INCREASING Current CO2 level in atmosphere: ppm ~ highest in 650,000 years

8 CO2 CONCENTRATION and TEMPERATURE

10 What does the science say?
IT’S GETTING WARMER 9 of 10 warmest years on record have occurred since 2000

11 ARCTIC ICE IS DISAPPEARING

13 January 2017 was third-warmest January on record

15 WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF INCREASING CO2 in ATMOSPHERE and CLIMATE CHANGE ?
OR “What’s so bad about warming up a little?”

22 Changing habitats means loss of species
Changing habitats means loss of species

23 Warmer water causes corals to expel the algae living in their tissues and turn white. Destroys coral reef ecosystems and organisms that live there.

24 ACIDIFICATION OF OCEANS
What’s so bad about a little more CO2? ACIDIFICATION OF OCEANS Affects coral reefs and shelled sea animals

25 HOW DO WE FIX THIS? STOP RELEASING GREENHOUSE GASES INTO ATMOSPHERE !

26 What’s the Kyoto Accord?
International agreement signed in 1997 Aimed at reducing global climate change Participants asked to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a percentage below 1990 emission levels Set binding targets for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for countries to reach by 2012 37 industrialized countries which make almost 65% of greenhouse gases (GHG) were to decrease to ~ 5% less than 1990 levels (US target = 7%)

27 KYOTO is “OLD NEWS”! The UNITED STATES is the only major industrial country that did NOT signed the Kyoto Accord (Actually we signed on and then “took it back”) Standards set by Kyoto expired in 2012 Countries have been meeting since 2009 to decide what will happen next

28 PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
!!!!! LANDMARK NEW CLIMATE AGREEMENT !!!!! More than 130 countries (including US and China) signed the landmark agreement to tackle climate change at a ceremony at UN headquarters on April 22, 2016 (Earth Day!) US pledged a 26-28% cut by 2025 compared with 2005 levels. It sets a collective goal of keeping global warming below 2° C compared to pre-industrial times, and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature rise to 1.5C. It requires all countries to submit plans for climate action and to update them every five years, though such plans are not legally binding.

29 Clean Power Plan United States- Clean Power Plan sets achievable standards to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 32 percent from 2005 levels by 2030 and giving states flexibility of how they will meet these goals . Feb 2016 Supreme Court moved to temporarily block implementing the plan to limit greenhouse gas emissions from power plants. Decision to come ?

30 THE SOLUTIONS MUST COME FROM AVERAGE CITIZENS. LIKE US
THE SOLUTIONS MUST COME FROM AVERAGE CITIZENS LIKE US! OUR LEADERS CAN’T FIX THIS WON’T

31 WE CAN’T COUNT ON OUR LEADERS to FIX THIS

32 Our President is ONLY world leader who does NOT accept climate science as REAL!

33 Our Congress denies climate change is real
114th Congress Jan 2015

34 SCOTT PRUITT A BILL HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO ELIMINATE THE EPA in 2018
A BILL HAS BEEN INTRODUCED TO ELIMINATE THE EPA in 2018 SCOTT PRUITT The head of the Environmental Protection Agency does not believe climate change is real.

35 HERE’S THE THING Even if you don’t “believe” in global warming . . .
HERE’S THE THING Even if you don’t “believe” in global warming . . . Even if our politicians refuse to admit there is a problem we should still work to reduce our emissions of global warming gases BECAUSE . . .

36 THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway!
THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway! Fossil fuels are a limited resource… eventually they will be gone!

37 THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway!
Our supply of fossil fuels is dependent on countries that are not “friendly” to the U.S.

38 THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway!
THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway! Drilling for and transporting fossil fuels has negative environmental consequences

39 Burning fossil fuels harms our health
THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway! Burning fossil fuels harms our health

40 THINGS WE DO TO “FIX CLIMATE CHANGE” make sense anyway!
Innovation and alternative energy technologies for automobiles and power generation are good for our economy

41 THINK ABOUT IT Scientists are RIGHT about man-made Climate change Scientists are WRONG about man-made Climate change WE KEEP DOING WHAT WE ARE DOING- NOTHING! Environmental Disaster Consequences too awful to think about Still have other problems associated with fossil fuel use: pollution/acid rain/ dependence on our enemies WE WORK TO GET OFF FOSSIL FUELS CHANGES HELP TURN THINGS AROUND + solve other fossil fuel problems Solves other problems associated with fossil fuel use

44 IT’S UP TO YOU, ME, ALL OF US! BUT YOUR GENERATION IS THE KEY

45 QUOTES This we know... the earth does not belong to man,
man belongs to earth. All things are connected, like the blood which connects one family. Whatever befalls the earth befalls the children of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life – he is merely a strand in it.  Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself. ~ Chief Seattle, 1854

46 If you want to see an endangered species, get up and look in the mirror. ~  John Young, former Apollo astronaut A true conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers, but borrowed from his children. ~ John James Audubon, It's not easy being green. ~  Kermit the Frog Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not ~ Dr. Seuss, The Lorax VIDEO
