Line Plots & Box-and-Whiskers Plots
Statistics Line Plots & Box-and-Whiskers Plots
2
Line Plots A line plot is exactly what is sounds like: a number line with plots on it. The line plot below shows how many times a number is recorded. What numbers are recorded and how many times are they recorded? 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9, 9, 9, 9
3
Line Plots From line plots, we can determine data such as mean, median, mode, range, outlier, and mean deviation. For example, find the mean, median, mode, range, outlier, and mean deviation of the following line plot. Mean: ≅ 29 Median: 29 Range: 33 – 26 = 7 Mode: 29 Outlier: no outlier Mean Deviation: = 1.45 Numbers arranged: 26, 27, 27, 29, 29, 29, 29, 30, 30, 31, 33

Box-and-Whiskers Plots
Box-and-Whiskers Plots sound weird…because they are. With Box-and-Whiskers, you are looking for 5 pieces of data: Biggest Number Smallest Number Median Lower Quartile (Median of smaller half) Upper Quartile (Median of larger half)

Box-and-Whiskers Plots
Ex: Construct a Box-and-Whiskers Plot using the following data: 9, 9, 1, 2, 3, 5, 4, 0, 7 Arrange numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 9 Smallest Number: 0 Biggest Number: 9 Median: 4 Lower Quartile: = 1.5 Upper Quartile: = 8 Draw lines to create your box-and-whiskers plot
6
Practice Create a box-and-whiskers plot of the following data: 0, 9, 8, 2, 1, 3, 4, 0, 9, 7, 8 Use the Line Plot below to determine mean, median, mode, range, outlier, and mean deviation.
