Contents: Introduction VinaREN technical infrastructure VinaREN Activities Conclusion

3 Introduction VinaREN (Vietnam Research and Education Network) is a network for research and education in Vietnam. This is a modern network, high speed, quality, and great performance with the ability to provide and share rich content, very practical for research and education activities in Vietnam. VinaREN now links with International Networks (TEIN3) at 155 Mbps.

4 VinaREN technical infrastructure
VinaREN national backbone network is formed from the connection of six network operation centers (NOC). 57 Members (leading Universities and Institutes in whole country) are connected directly to the backbone. Connected 11 provinces and major Cities in Vietnam. VinaREN telecommunication infrastructure in Hanoi city is built based on the ring with three main nodes.

5 Technical infrastructure
International connections: 155 Mbps connects to NOC-TEIN in Hong Kong. 40 Mbps connects to Internet for access to electronic information sources in the country and the world through the union of Vietnam libraries. National backbone: Connected to the network operations centers with bandwidth: 155 Mbps: VNNOC to NOC-HCM. 45 Mbps: VNNOC to NOC-DN.; NOC-HCM and NOC-ĐN; NOC-DN to NOC-HUE; NOC-HCM to NOC-CT and VNNOC to NOC-TN. VinaREN member networks are connected to the national backbone network by direct optical fiber lines with Fast Ethernet/Giga Ethernet standard or private channel (leased line) via the network operations centers (NOCs) or the points of present (POPs). Connections were conducted via Core Switch at the NOC;

7 Technical infrastructure
There are three models used to connect the members to VinaREN as follows: .

8 Technical infrastructure
Model 1: appropriate for members which want to connect several workstations to VinaREN. In this model, these members use the layer 2 switch to connect to VinaREN Model 2: suitable for members using the router or layer 3 switch which is not capable of running EGP dynamic routing protocol or not enough memory to receive 11,000 routes from TEIN Model 3: suitable for members using router or layer 3 switch which is capable of running EGP dynamic routing protocols, and enough memory to receive 11,000 routes from TEIN. Model 2 Model 3

9 Technical infrastructure
With this classification, VinaREN gives instructions for routing ased on the type of network devices that members use to connect to VinaREN For network administration, VinaREN uses the following softwares: CiscoWorks - Lan Management Solution (LMS): a tool to support network management Cisco Performance Visibility Manager (PVM): a tool to monitor network performance QoS Policy Manager (QPM): a tool to manage QoS policy Cisco Security MARS (CS-MARS): a tool to manage network security Intrusion Detection System Services Module (IDSM): a tool to monitor, analyze and react to the attacks

10 Research IPv6: Multicast (IPv4, IPv6) Data center
Network Administration (Organize VNNOC, Bandwidth Monitoring, System Administration, Implemeting network services) Routing among member networks Measurement of bandwith Grid Computing

11 Services Network Management E-leanning; Network Services:
Network Security IPv 6 and Multicast Routing bedween networks Technical Support for High performance Services on Research and Education: E-leanning; Telemedicine; E-science; Grid Computing; E-culture; E-agriculture; Disaster management, Climate change, forecast Network research; Access to the online database on the Internet.

12 VinaREN Activities Implementing research activities: Open Source systems development (Open sources for network management and Open courses ware on the Network); Advanced network technologies: network security, monitoring, network management, Grid computing, etc…; E-learning, E-lectures, (University: HUT, VNU, HCMVNU, CTU, Hanoi University of Education, Hue University; project BESETOHA …); Download and process data for Hydrometeorological forecasting in Vietnam

13 VinaREN Activities Video conferencing, telemedicine (NOCs, Hospitals, Institutes); Participation in International and regional projects: Asean Virtual Institute on Science and Technology TEIN2/TEIN3-based S&T Collaborations among ASEAN, ASEM Countries International Collaboration on Network Application

14 VinaREN Activities Access to the more journal titles on science and technology in the Internet (Database ScienceDirect, Proquest, Database on S&T in Vietnamese language) Access to the information resources on the Internet (Library consortium for online Database on the Internet);

15 VinaREN Activities Despite of many difficulties in Establishment, Development and Exploration of VinaREN, so we have done very important steps: VinaREN linked 57 leading institutes, universities and hospitals through an high speed and high performance network. VinaREN linked Vietnam research and education communities to the international ones in Asia-Pacific, Europe, North America and at global scale. VinaREN is a really good environment and tool sets for connection, cooperation and development on Research and Education.

16 Some Limitations Although there have been many efforts and results over the past years, but VinaREN still has few limitations need to overcome in the coming years. They are: Using VinaREN network for many members still has limitations, do not yet promote the role of VinaREN for research and education; Many members are still passive in organizing the exploitation and using VinaREN in their regular functions. They do not yet cooperate and promote the role of VinaREN in implementing programs and collaboration in the country and the world; Many members are not prepared and do not have suitable necessary investment on equipment and professional personnel to promote VinaREN efficiency; The awareness for VinaREN role and effects in research and education at many levels is limited. Attention of many leaders in VinaREN members is also inadequate.

17 Thank You for Attention
