About the IFA’s Lead Sampling Program Partners: Indiana Department of Environmental Management (“IDEM”) Professional School Associations Public School Districts Developed with federal funds School participation is voluntary Targets Public schools Young children Schools not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act

The Problem with Lead Sources: paint, soil, dust, consumer products, water, etc. EPA Lead Action level - 15 parts per billion (ppb) Lead found in tap water typically comes from the corrosion of interior plumbing fixtures and materials that contain lead Amount of lead in water depends on: Temperature Time in the pipes pH Types of minerals in water

Lead Sampling Program Process
School District Enrolls School provides maps and building specific information Visit 1: Sample Plan Development IFA/Contractor locates all drinking water sources in buildings Visit 2: Sample Collection IFA/Contractor collects and ship to state-certified laboratories Lab Analysis Laboratories analyze samples for total lead using EPA method Results & Remediation Guidance Issued IFA makes recommendations tailored to each school Cost of remediation responsibility of schools

Massachusetts Lead Sampling Program
Enrollment numbers: 818 schools participating 55,919 samples collected Results: Approximately 725 of participating schools had one or more fixtures exceeding the action level for lead or copper Of the total samples analyzed: About 7 % exceeded the action level for lead only, 1% exceeded the action level for lead and copper, and 1% exceeded the action level for copper only.
