His name at birth was Leslie Lynch King Jr
His name at birth was Leslie Lynch King Jr. He was later renamed after his Step Father Before becoming Vice President, Ford had been a Congressman from Michigan. He was a likeable and unpretentious man, but many people questioned his ability to be president.

Road to the White House Vice President Spiro T. Agnew resigned from office in October 1973 over charges of accepting bribes and evading taxes. Nixon used his power under the 25th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to appoint Ford as his new vice president After the Water Gate Scandal; Ford became the first unelected president in the nation’s history

The Pardoning of Nixon In the first month of Ford’s presidency, he pardoned Nixon for all crimes that he might have committed. Ford was accused of making a “deal” with Nixon. This cost Ford much support from the American people. **This was the most controversial event in Ford’s presidency**

Economy He encouraged voluntary steps to be taken by the American public to rid themselves of the inflation. Ford tried to find ways to combat the incredibly high inflation rate during his tenure. Not only did inflation continue, but the economy also sank deeper into a recession The Unemployment Rate also rose to 9%

WIN On October 8, 1974, in an address to a joint session of Congress broadcast live over radio and television, President Gerald Ford introduces his WIN, or Whip Inflation Now, program to improve the economy.

Helsinki Accords On August 1, 1975 Ford helped reduce tensions with the Soviet Union by signing the Helsinki Accords in Helsinki, Finland The Helsinki Accords were meant to strengthen the relationship between Western nations and the communist countries of Europe. The accords were signed by the United States and Canada, and all the countries of Europe (except Albania who did not sign until 1991)

Southeast Asia Ford could not get funding to help support the South Vietnamese who were facing a strong North Vietnamese army. South Vietnam fell shortly after. Cambodia also fell to the Khmer Rouge, a radical Communist faction that conducted genocide against over a million of its own people

Cambodia A US merchant ship, the Mayaguez was captured by the Cambodian military. Ford called for an attack. 38 US Marines died in this assault, but 39 crewmen were freed.
