Deciding which play/musical to produce
Finding the money to produce the show
Hiring the director, choreographer

6. Who’s in charge? Director: The directors is responsible for:
Directing the actors and interpreting the script
Coordinating the design and technical elements of the production
Working with the choreographer in a musical.

7. Who’s in charge? Stage Manager: The stage manager is responsible for:
Overseeing all backstage elements of a production
Scheduling rehearsals
Monitoring the script
Supervising all technical staff

8. Who’s in charge? Choreographer*: The choreographer is responsible for:
Creating the dances in a musical or play
A Fight Choreographer creates the violence in a play or musical
*choreographers are only needed on a case- by-case basis depending on the show

9. Designers Set Designer: The set designer is responsible for:
Designing and overseeing the creation of a play or musical’s set.
Working with the director to determine how the set should look and work
Staying within the scenic budget

10. Designers Lighting Designer: The lighting designer is responsible for:
Creating and overseeing operation of lighting effects
Working with the director and scene designer to determine what lighting should be used. (COLLABORATION! )

Creating the costumes for the actors to wear on stage
Working with the director to determine what the characters should look like.
Supervising the costume crew who build the costumes to fit the actors.

Creating any properties used by the actors on stage; a property is any object the actors handle (prop is short for property)
Working with the director to find out what props are needed for each character in each scene

13. Designers Sound Designer: The sound designer is responsible for:
Creating the sound effects the director wants in the play or musical
Determining what kind of amplification will help the actors to be heard well by the audience
Purchasing needed sound equipment

A person who portrays a role on stage
Either male or female; acting is a profession and, like female doctors are called doctors, not doctresses, all should be identified as actors, regardless of gender

15. Who’s Backstage? Running Crew: The running crew is responsible for:
Making scene changes throughout the performance
Setting and preparing all props for each performance
Working safely with each other and the actors

16. Who’s Backstage? Light and Sound Technicians :
The light and sound crew are responsible for:
Running all light and sound cues the lighting and sound designers created
Making sure all equipment is running properly before each performance

17. Who creates the world? Playwright:
A playwright is a person who writes all the words a character says in a play
The script may only have the lines the characters say or may also include descriptions of the set and/or stage directions (what the actors do on stage)
