Locomotion The ability to move from place to place in order to increase chance of survival (food, shelter, avoiding predators, finding a mate) Involves interaction of bones, muscles, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Bones- support, protection, attach muscles, act as levers, produce red and white blood cells.
2
Cartilage- flexible, fibrous, connective tissue, provides cushioning and support (embryos skeleton, ribs, between vertebrae, nose, ears, trachea) Muscle- provides movement for body Skeletal- voluntary, striated, antagonistic pairs (flexor, extensor) EX. Bicep, tricep Smooth- involuntary, not striated, visceral, internal organs and arteries. Cardiac- heart, involuntary, appears striated
3
Tendons- attach muscles to bones
Ligaments- connect bones to bones at movable joints Disorders- Arthritis (inflammation of joints) Tendonitis (inflammation of tendon, where it attaches to bone)
