1 Why is this valley dry? What questions can we ask about it?
Thirsty City Owens Lake was a salty lake until 1913, when the Owens River was diverted into the Los Angeles Aqueduct to supply drinking water to Los Angeles, quickly draining the lake. Today, Owens Lake is a dried salt flat that contains some pooled water following rains.  Why is this valley dry? What questions can we ask about it?

2 ALL will be able to draw a climate graph (Level 3-4)
Thirsty City Today we are learning about… Las Vegas, whose water use is unsustainable. Residents here are being encouraged to save water. By the end of the lesson… ALL will be able to draw a climate graph (Level 3-4) MOST will be able to explain why Las Vegas has a water shortage (Level 5) SOME will be able to suggest how people in Las Vegas can save water (Level 5-6)

3 Climate Graphs Textbook work is optional – probably will not be needed.

4 Thirsty City Plot a climate graph of Las Vegas and use it, and what you have seen in the video, to explain why Las vegas has problems with water supply. Using the resources, design a informational leaflet/poster to encourage Las Vegas residents to save water. You will need to suggest to them how they can do this. Textbook work is optional – probably will not be needed.

6 Thirsty City The Southern Nevada Planning Authority is planning to build a 555km pipeline from central Nevada to Las Vegas as a solution to the city's future water supply problems.  Owens Lake was a salty lake until 1913, when the Owens River was diverted into the Los Angeles Aqueduct to supply drinking water to Los Angeles, quickly draining the lake. Today, Owens Lake is a dried salt flat that contains some pooled water following rains.  Is this sustainable?
