4. What is Samba? Traditional Brazilian music with percussion instruments
Key part in Brazilian ‘carnival’
From African drumming, with call and response, polyrhythms (two or more rhythms at once) and improvisation.

5. Performing Samba
Master drummer who directs the band, leading call and response
Sections of polyrhythms where each instrument has a different part to play.
Master drummer decides when next sections begin, such as more call and response or a new section altogether.
The piece will often finish how it started, with a call and response finale.

The master drummer may improvise the ‘Call’ part, however, the ‘Response’ is often rehearsed as the entire band need to respond with the same part.

Make sure the ‘response’ section is different to the ‘call’ and try to come up with as many different call and responses as you can.
