Unit 1 Fitness for sport and exercise
Topic C.2. Importance of fitness testing to sports performers and coaches
2
Components of Fitness Methods of training
Watch one of the videos – to be running when students enter the classroom. Students are asked to identify the components of fitness being used and the methods of training being used Remaining video can be watched by students in their own time
3
BIG Picture Think – Pair – Share “Why is fitness testing important to sports coaches and athletes?”
4
Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will have:
Revised the components of fitness; methods of training; fitness testing. Applied this knowledge and learnt how to interpret the results of fitness tests Learnt why fitness testing is important Practiced exam questions relating to these topics
5
What you need to know The importance of fitness testing to sports performers and coaches: Gives baseline data for monitoring / improving performance Can design training programmes based on test results and determine if training programmes are working Results can give a performer something to aim for / goal setting

9
The ability to maintain centre of mass over a base of support
The time taken for a sports performer to respond to a stimulus and the initiation of their response Having an adequate range of motion in all joints of the body; the ability to move a joint fluidly through its complete range of movement. Distance divided by the time taken, measured in metres per second (m/s). The faster an athlete runs over a given distance, the greater their speed The product of strength and speed. Expressed as the work done in a unit of time The ability of a sports performer to quickly and precisely move or change direction without losing balance or time. The smooth flow of movement needed to perform a motor task efficiently and accurately. The relative ratio of fat mass to fat-free mass (vital organs, muscle, bone) in the body. The ability to maintain centre of mass over a base of support The ability of the muscular system to work efficiently, where a muscle can continue contracting over a period of time against a light to moderate fixed resistance load. Match the definitions to the components The maximum force (in kg or N) that can be generated by a muscle or muscle group. The ability of the cardiorespiratory system to work efficiently, supplying nutrients and oxygen to working muscles during sustained physical activity.

Components of Fitness Methods of training
Watch one of the videos – to be running when students enter the classroom. Students are asked to identify the components of fitness being used and the methods of training being used Remaining video can be watched by students in their own time
15
Name the components of fitness needed
For each sport Name the components of fitness needed Name the methods of training that would be used Name the fitness tests that would be used
16
Applying this Knowledge
17
Case Studies
19
Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will have:
Revised the components of fitness; methods of training; fitness testing. Prove it… Name all the components of fitness (Challenge: can you name the physical components of fitness and the skill-related components?) Name a method of training that could be used to improve each component of fitness Which fitness test would you use to measure each component of fitness?
20
Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will have:
Applied this knowledge and learnt how to interpret the results of fitness tests Prove it… Use your work from the lesson to prove to the person sitting next to you that you are able to accurately interpret the results of fitness test
21
Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will have:
Learnt why fitness testing is important Prove it… Explain to your partner why fitness testing is important for athletes and coaches (HINT – there are 4 reasons. How many can you explain?)
22
Learning Outcomes By the end of the lesson you will have:
Practiced exam questions relating to these topics Prove it… Finally, think of a question on this topic that you might be asked in the exam. Test the person next to you, do they know the answer?

Question 7 1. Different exercises/stations/ separate activities/ range of stations
2. Flexible method/work everything or can be tailored to specific muscles/skills/activities.
3. set time/number of reps/equiv
4. move from station to station/equiv
5. allowing time for muscle recovery/work for period then rest/alternating muscle groups worked.
6. Credit responses relating to advantages i.e. large numbers in a small space/no specialist equipment required/low cost (3×1)

Question 8 Hope/sprinter more intense/anaerobic stations/equiv Accept reverse re Jade/long distance runner/differences in recovery time/reps NB – allow description but must be clear whether long distant runner or sprinter. NB – Does not need to state for both performers DO NOT ACCEPT - Hope does sprints or Jade does long distance.

Question 9 Answer Mark Cross-country runnerFootballer
Training Method that can be used by both boysHow training method would be adapted by RobHow training method would be adapted by ImranAccept any: Interval Continuous Fartlek Circuit Weight Cross Do not accept Cooper runHow training method implemented by long distance runner eg if fartlek – running over different terrains Identifies specific components of fitness required in activity eg circuit includes exercises for muscular endurance Accept specific examples of training sessions eg if weight training, high reps, low weights. How training method implemented by footballer eg if fartlek – focus on change of pace Identifies specific components of fitness required in activity eg circuit includes exercises for muscular strength Accept specific examples of training sessions eg if weight training, low reps, high weightsNB Answers need to relate to IMPLEMENTATION of training method not why the method benefits the performer
NB If training method incorrect, do not accept anything else
NB The method of training has to be consistent with both performers (3 × 1)
