3. Students will model the rock cycle using the following materials: 1 Crayon 1 plastic knife 1 Foil Cup Cake Holder 1 Styrofoam Cup Hot Water
Objective

4. Opening Question- What kind of rock is your crayon most similar to
Opening Question- What kind of rock is your crayon most similar to? Step 1- We now need to create sediment. Unwrap your crayon and create a pile of crayon shavings in your cup cake holder. Step 1 Question- What process is this representing? Step 2- Walk around and trade sediment with other students.
Procedure

5. Step 3- Wrap up your sediment in your cup cake holder
Step 3- Wrap up your sediment in your cup cake holder. Press down really hard on the pile. *When you unwrap the new rock, it will be fragile but should hold together. Step 3 Question- What rock form do you now have? Step 4- Fill the styrofoam cup with hot water and place your cupcake holder in the water so that it floats on top *You do not want any water to mix with your rock.

6. Step 5- Remove the foil when the wax is soft to the touch and the colors have swirled together but not so much that the different colors are indistinguishable. Let the wax cool. Step 5 Question- What kind of rock do you have now? Step 6- Dump out your cup and refill it with hot water. Step 7- Place your foil and wax into the cup again so that it is floating.

7. Step 8- Allow the wax to completely melt
Step 8- Allow the wax to completely melt. Once it has melted, remove the cup cake holder from the water. Step 8 Question- What type of rock do you have now? How is it different from before?
