The first people who came to North America followed the movement of large mammals in pursuit of food, resulting in the first population of the northernmost regions of North America. Do you depend on animals for food today? If so, which animals? (turn and talk to discuss)

The constant search for food meant trying new methods. Early Americans caught fish and hunted smaller animals, while also gathering berries and grains. Farming was another new option that was beginning to emerge, and its development would change the way the nomadic way of life of many groups. Who can predict how farming would change the lives of nomads? (Turn and talk to discuss)

Upon completion of the reading, we will answer the following questions: What are some foods early Americans planted? How did farming change the nomadic way of life? What factors likely led to some early Americans to change from hunting to farming?
