INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE External EHS Expert Panel Workshop
4/2016 Marek Bizdra EHS Specialist Roman Vrána EMP Specialist
2
Industrial hygiene Safety Workshop 4/2016
Contain: Noise Oxygen deficiency Chemicals and mixtures Vibration EMP (electromagnetic pulse) Magnetic field
3
Noise Locations: Mechanical workshop in ELI 2 (Compressed air, Compressor, Lathe, Milling machine, Grinder, Drill etc.) we measured it 87 dB Control room (we will measure with 55 dB) Engine rooms (we will see) apox. 70 dB
4
Locations considered:
Oxygen deficiency Locations considered: Interaction chambers Laser compressors Technological shafts and channels Sludge tanks and oil separators (H2S) Controls: Procedures and permit Special training Portable oxygen detector
5
Hazardous Chemicals Types Controls
Toxic (H2S, Methanol, Benzene etc.), Corrosives (acids), Volatile compounds, Disinfectants, Heavy metals etc. Controls Chemical safety manual, IH Plan Training plans Workplace monitoring (permanent and occasional incl. emergency) PPEs Qualified personnel - Petr and Hanka
6
Hazardous Chemicals Washing table in ELI 2
Washing of parts during the processing Volatile organic substance Vapors can generate explosive atmosphere Permanent vs. portable monitoring PPEs Hazardous waste management
7
Vibrations Vacuum pumps Turbomolecular pumps on the vacuum chambers – approx. 100 pc. Roughing pumps in plant rooms - approx. 25 pc.
9
EMP (electromagnetic pulse)
Pulse Power Area (L.2.09): Transient electromagnet field up to 2 kV/m from 1 to 30 MHz Transient magnetic field up to 180 A/m from 500 Hz to 5 kHz. Target Areas (Experimental Halls E1, E2, E3, E4, E5 and E6): Transient electromagnetic field up to 250 kV/m in the frequency range 30 MHz to 20 GHz.

EMP (electromagnetic pulse)
Protection: 1.5 m concrete wall can provide greater than 80 dB shielding over a broad range of frequency IEC 60364, Electrical Installations for Buildings. IEC 61000‐5‐2, Electromagnetic Compatibility. EN 62305, Protection against Lightning. Building Earthing Network Main earth terminal for the building 400 V supply. Main 400 V switch‐board. Lightning protection system as required by IEC Extraneous metalwork to reduce touch voltages. Laser equipment e.g. terminal every 5 m in floor trenches. EMC filters for pulse power equipment.

Magnetic field E2 – Betatron (intensity aprox. 1 T) IN THE INTERACTION CHAMBER E5 – LUX (intensity aprox. 1 mT) IN THE ESPEC ELECTRON SPECTROMETR E5 – HELL (intensity aprox. 1.2 T) IN THE HELL INTERACTION CHAMBER
15
Magnetic field E5 – HELL Conservative values of spectrometer parameters were used: 1.2 T magnetic field; 50 cm long, 20 cm wide and 6 cm high gap between the electromagnets; iron core of the coils; copper wires of the coils: 10 kA (1 A in 10k turns), 1 mm wire.
16
Questions What should be covered by IH plan? How do you perform field measurements? How to manage magnetic field hazard? Do you know about incidents with vacuum pumps?
