MISSION STATEMENT We will strive to provide an excellent education in chemistry for a variety of learners. We will understand that chemistry is a way of thinking about how matter is constructed, organized, and functions. We build this chemical foundation in a context that helps students become scientifically responsible citizens, with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and values that will allow them to be successful in scientific or non-scientific professions. We will accomplish our classroom goals if each student:

Learning Goal By the end of the semester/class, 100% of the Chemistry students will demonstrate competency in all skills and objectives outlined in the North Carolina Essential Standards for Chemistry by attaining a score of 85 % or higher on quarterly exams, the mid-term exam, and are 100% proficient on the NC Chemistry Final Exam!

Classroom Requirements
2 inch binder for this class only Loose leaf paper Pencil and pen TI-83+ calculator (highly suggested) or scientific calculator The classroom will provide the following upon request: Textbook: Holt’s Modern Chemistry Helpful Items: Latex gloves, distilled water, kleenex

Binders/Folders Students are expected to keep a neat and orderly binder. The binder must contain all classroom notes, homework, and assignments that they have completed. Homework checks will be done to ensure that all work has been completed.

Chapter Tests/Quizzes
Students will be taking chapter tests and quizzes (sometimes surprise!) throughout the course. In addition, students must take Chemistry Final Exam (20 % of grade).

Safety Regulations Students are expected to abide by all laboratory safety regulations. Safety glasses, gloves, and aprons will be required for most lab experiments (provided by the school). Signed Safety Contract

Missed Notes, Homework, Assignments, Labs
Students are responsible for missed notes, homework, and assignments due to absence. This make-up work must be completed within 5 days as per the Lake Norman High School student handbook. Any exemptions will be dealt with by Administration. Students are to have missed notes written down and obtained worksheets from the “extras” file before asking Ms. Carroll for explanation/assistance.

School Rules Students are also required to abide by Lake Norman High School Student Rules, including but not limited to: No profanity No disrespectful behavior Dress code observed

Classroom Rules Talk only at appropriate times (be respectful when teacher/other students are speaking Raise your hand to ask a question or directions Bottled water is allowed (all other food and drink is prohibited) Gum is allowed (if blowing bubbles, snapping, or chewing with mouth open, that privilege will be suspended for one month. If caught disposing of gum anywhere other than the garbage can, privileges are suspended for the rest of the year!)

Ms. Carroll dismisses the class, not the bell. Students will remain in their seats until dismissed. Respect others and their property (be polite and use good manners).

Any statement resembling “let’s have a free day” will result in 5 extra assignment questions for the day.” Bathroom breaks are suggested to be taken in the last 30 minutes of class.

Cell phones are on silent and out of sight between bells. They will only be used in class with permission. Laptops will be open or closed as per teacher instructions.

Quest On-line Homework
Students will be assigned on-line homework through the Quest program provided by the University of Texas. There are over 11,200 chemistry problems inventoried for use. The Homework Service delivers unique, algorithm-based problems, where each student receives a version different from those given to other students.

Canvas Learning Management System
Assignments, information, and resources will be located at our learning management system called Canvas. Students need to be active in Canvas regularly. Canvas will be synched with Powerschool. You will use your school-assigned Powerschool login to access Canvas. Canvas may be accessed at

Teacher Availability I am available all mornings from 7:15 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and after school from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. I am also available a SMART lunch for questions

Confirmation I have read and understand all of the aforementioned information I have visited Ms. Carroll’s school website I have received and read the “12 Essential Learning Goals” and “Student Safety Contract”! My child/I will obtain my UT EID number/password and enroll in the online chemistry course at I understand that assignments will be posted in Powerschool/Canvas daily, and I may look at my child’s current grades and assignments in Powerschool.
