2 Communication is Key in this class!
I want you to be successful!!! That means ask me questions (by raising hand not interrupting) me Talk to me before school My is

24 Questions…..

25 10 FACTS about the Solar Eclipse
This will be the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in 38 years. The last one occurred February 26, 1979 Earth gets 2 Solar Eclipses a year

26

27 A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth
A solar eclipse is a lineup of the Sun, the Moon, and Earth. The Moon, directly between the Sun and Earth, casts a shadow on our planet. If you’re in the dark part of that shadow (the umbra), you’ll see a total eclipse. If you’re in the light part (the penumbra), you’ll see a partial eclipse

28 Solar eclipses don’t happen at every New Moon
Solar eclipses don’t happen at every New Moon. The reason is that the Moon’s orbit tilts 5° to Earth’s orbit around the Sun.

29 Everyone in the continental U. S. will see at least a partial eclipse
Everyone in the continental U.S. will see at least a partial eclipse. In fact, if you have clear skies on eclipse day, the Moon will cover at least 48 percent of the Sun’s surface

30 Only being on the center line will allow viewers to see the diamond rings and the interval of totality between them.

31 Totality lasts a maximum of 2 minutes and 40. 2 seconds. That’s it
Totality lasts a maximum of 2 minutes and 40.2 seconds. That’s it. To experience that length, you’ll need to be slightly south of Carbondale, Illinois, in Giant City State Park. You might think about getting there early. Maximum totality is not the longest possible in The longest possible duration of the total phase of a solar eclipse is 7 minutes and 32 seconds. Unfortunately, the next solar eclipse whose totality approaches 7 minutes won’t occur until June 13, 2132

32 Totality is safe to look at
Totality is safe to look at. During the time the Moon’s disk covers that of the Sun, it’s safe to look at the eclipse. In fact, to experience the awesomeness of the event, you must look at the Sun without a filter during totality.

33 Only one large city has a great view
Only one large city has a great view. Congratulations if you’re one of the 609,000 people lucky enough to live in Nashville. The city center and parts north of it will experience 2+ minutes of totality HERE in MIAMI The moon will block 78% of the Suns Surface

34 Isn’t the sun much bigger than the moon?
Yes, the Sun’s a lot bigger. Our daytime star’s diameter is approximately 400 times larger than that of the Moon. What a coincidence that it also lies roughly 400 times farther away. This means both disks appear to be the same size.

35 What happens if I view it without protective glasses?
Two eye experts explained what actually happens to your eye if you look at an eclipse. There are two types of damage sunlight can inflict. One is “direct thermal injury,” caused by near-infrared radiation, meaning the light can literally burn your eye. Because you can’t see that type of light, and because your retina—the light-sensitive tissue lining inside your eye—doesn’t have pain receptors, the damage can occur without you even knowing it.

36 But the more concerning sort of damage is called photochemical toxicity, and it results from the light you can see. when your eye gets hit with a direct shot of sunlight, those atoms can destroy your retinal tissue. young adults—especially young males—are those most likely to suffer these eye injuries from the eclipse.

37 Those who want to watch the 2017 eclipse, or photograph it need to make sure they take the proper precautions. Looking through a telescope, binoculars, or a camera lens without the right eyewear isn’t safe either. The event will only last a few minutes, but the damage it can cause could last a lifetime.
