3. AVID Content Teachers

Since the beginning of Dana’s program in , nearly ALL teachers have participated in intense AVID training
The expectation is that AVID strategies are common practice in all classrooms
AVID teaching strategies are a collection of the most exceptional teaching practices

A reminder of the goals of the program
AVID strategies to focus on this year (Cornell Notes, AVID binder, etc.)
Overview of AVID class (Day-to-day, special field trips, guest speakers, etc.)
Expectations for parent involvement (How can you support our endeavors for success in the program at home?)

Heavy duty 3-ring binder, 3 inch rings
Six or more dividers with tabs to separate
each class including AVID
Zipper pouch to store supplies
Two or more sharpened pencils

20. Ask to look at your student’s binder
Talk to your student about school
Be aware of your student’s classes and his/her performance in each. Praise your student’s strengths, and help him/her find ways to improve in areas of weakness.
Ask to look at your student’s binder
Review your student’s guided study group form to see what kinds of questions he/ she is asking in class.
Find out who your student’s friends are.
Be enthusiastic and supportive. Your student’s participation in AVID will keep him/ her motivated and excited about reaching the goal of attending four- year college or university.

Provide a quiet place free of noise and distractions where your student can study and do his/her homework.
Show that you care by asking your student what topic(s) he/she is studying in a particular class
