3 What is Health? Life Expectancy- Better healthcare, education, nutrition, sanitation, working conditions Quality of Life- Degree of overall satisfaction that a person gets from life.

7 PHYSICAL HEALTH Physical activity - includes strength, flexibility, and endurance Nutrition and diet - includes nutrient intake, fluid intake, and healthy digestion Alcohol and drugs - includes the abstinence from or reduced consumption of these substances Medical self-care - includes addressing minor ailments or injuries and seeking emergency care as necessary Rest and sleep - includes periodic rest and relaxation, along with high quality sleep

8 MENTAL HEALTH Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

9 SOCIAL HEALTH How you get along with other people, how other people react to you, and how you interact with society. Social wellness involves building healthy, nurturing and supportive relationships as well as fostering a genuine connection with those around you.

10 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH Environmental health consists of preventing or controlling disease, injury, and disability related to the interactions between people and their environment. Outdoor air quality Surface and ground water quality Toxic substances and hazardous wastes Homes and communities Infrastructure and surveillance Global environmental health Creating health-promoting environ

11 What Affects your Health?
Health Status – The sum of the positive and negative influences on a person’s health and well-being. Have a discussion on what you think affects your health.

12 HEREDITY The passing on of physical or mental characteristics genetically from one generation to another. The study of heredity is called genetics.

13 STRUCTURE Cells are the basic unit of structure.
Inside cells are structures called genes. Genes are made of DNA. Genes are formed together to make chromosomes. Genes carry instructions to make proteins. Proteins are made up of amino acids.

14 Other Influences on Health
Physical Environment- All physical and social conditions that surround a person and can influence them. Social Environment- The people who you spend time with. Most importantly family who teach you many first health skills. Culture- Beliefs and patterns of behavior that are shared by a group of people.

17 Stress Eustress- Positive stress or factors
Distress- Negative stress of factors Stressor- An event or situation that causes stress Physical and mental effects

18 Physical Stages Alarm Stage- Body releases adrenaline, increase HR and breathing, focused. Prepare for the fight or flight response Resistance Stage- Reduced initial effects, may become irritable, tired or fatigued. Exhaustion Stage- Physical and emotional resources are depleted. Usually occurs after chronic stress.

19 HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 Healthy People is a set of goals and objectives with 10-year targets designed to guide national health promotion and disease prevention efforts to improve the health of all people in the United States.

20 Vision, Mission, Goals Vision—A society in which all people live long, healthy lives. Mission—Healthy People 2020 strives to: Identify nationwide health improvement priorities. Increase public awareness and understanding of the determinants of health, disease, and disability, and the opportunities for progress. Provide measurable objectives and goals that are applicable at the national, state, and local levels. Engage multiple sectors to take actions to strengthen policies and improve practices that are driven by the best available evidence and knowledge Identify critical research, evaluation, and data collection needs Overarching Goals- Attain high quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death. Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups. Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all. Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stage
