Dual Language /Immersion NRMPS December 5, 2016 c&I Board committee

2 Timeline - Checklist

3 PLAN 11/17/2016 – VIF Implementation Team, Principals, ED for Elementary Education, and Director for Curriculum Support met to discuss implementation of Global School Training and DL/I Also included in the meeting were the Chief Finance Officer and ED for Personnel The goal is to transform all four DL/I sites into GLOBAL SCHOOLS

4 Statistics 9 in 10 students recognize that…
…jobs are becoming increasingly international in nature …they need a better understanding of different cultures …that traditional education does not satisfy this need 80% of teachers agree that it is more important than ever for students to learn about other countries and cultures, yet only 30% of teachers incorporate material from other countries or cultures They attribute this to lack of resources and administrative support 80% of graduates wish they had more classes and more in depth instruction in foreign language (Sources – National Education Association, Global Education Exploration Study, US Department of Education)

5 Why a Global School? Implementing DL/I in isolation can create some division if we do not prepare the school We want to avoid creating a “school within the school” Implementing a school-wide global school training creates a bridge between DL/I classes and traditional classes Partnering with VIF will provide our four DL/I sites to receive 30 years of experience in global education VIF has ensured alignment with NCDPI and the State Board of Education Global Initiative Goals

6 What Is a Global School? A global school does three things:
Asserts “Global Competence” which infers an understanding of international issues, develops an appreciation of people from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, and helps students develop skills needed to function in a world community Implements “Global Education” which is grounded in traditional academic disciplines AND is taught in a context that integrates global content and multicultural perspectives. Addresses the “Opportunity Gap” affected by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, English proficiency, and other factors

7 How do we transform a school into a Global School?
Step One is to Create a School Level Global Team or Committee Dedicated group of 4-6 administrators and teachers who will lead. The team… Builds excitement Encourages staff participation Involves parents and communities Networks with other global schools Supports continuing professional development The Global Team will help to divide responsibility in order to make the first year of global transformation more manageable One team member is the Global Leader Another is the primary contact between the school and VIF Teachers provide the voice to direct the outcome

8 How do we transform a school into a Global School? cont’d
Step Two is to train our Global Teams Train the trainers process Face-to-face training with VIF Step Three is for Global Teams to begin leading PD at their individual sites Blended training including face-to-face and online modules Principals with their teams determine how deeply we dive this year Teachers can earn badges toward global teacher certification VIF badges are recognized by NCDPI Step Four is to develop and implement a plan to address the four components of a Global School

9 The Four Components of a Global School
Developing the Global Educator Global schools provide educators differentiated professional development, tools, and supports. Global Look and Feel Global schools have an environment that reflect global learning and ideas. Globalizing Instruction Global schools ensure students are highly engaged and develop knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed for a complex global society. Connecting Beyond the Classroom Global schools connect classrooms with local and global learning communities.
