On behalf of Superintendent, Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps, we welcome you to our 2016 Vietnamese/English Dual Language Immersion Family Information Night!

What is Dual Language? Dual Language (DL): Integrates native English speaking and English language learning students in the same classroom and provides academic instruction through two languages, one of which is the primary language of each group of students

What does the program look like?
50% of the day’s instruction is in English and 50% is in Vietnamese Periods of instruction during which only one language is used Balanced number of English only speaking students and English Learner students in the class Goals are bilingualism, biliteracy, achievement at or above grade level, and multicultural competence

Specialized awards given to any student who meets the OCDE biliteracy criteria Biliteracy ribbons given in preschool, Kindergarten, third, fifth or sixth grades Biliteracy medal given in eighth grade

Vietnamese Programs at Cal State University Fullerton: - Bachelor’s degree in Vietnamese - Vietnamese teaching credential pathway (7th - 12th grades) -Vietnamese Bilingual Authorization (K-6 dual language immersion)

Parent Involvement Commit to long-term (K-6) participation in the dual language immersion program Develop an understanding of dual language immersion education Attend Dual Family Nights (about three a year) Read with your child (in English) minutes daily Encourage the use of the Vietnamese language outside of school and learn as much as you can Enjoy the challenges and celebrate the results You do not need to be able to speak, understand, read, or write Vietnamese in order for your child to be successful

Registration Process Outside the District:
Request an Interdistrict Transfer from the district of residence. Bring the Approved Interdistrict Transfer to WSD district office for approval. Complete and return kindergarten registration packet with original birth certificate and immunization records to WSD office. We will be accepting applications for classes in the school year: 52 spots in kindergarten and eight spots in first grade beginning March 1, 2017

Registration Process Residents of WSD:
Students enrolling in the Vietnamese/English Dual Language Immersion Program may submit their materials beginning February 1, 2017. The open enrollment window is February 1st through April 14th for students who are not in the DeMille boundary. Parents shall request an open enrollment form from their school of residence by meeting with the principal and obtaining a releasing signature.
