17 Read TFA Chapter 9 in class – Characterization: Ekwefi

18 Ekwefi Despite the regular beatings and reprimands given by Okonkwo (he even almost shoots her at one point in the story), Ekwefi's fearlessness and boldness stay with her. She has many of the key attributes that are so revered by Okonkwo and normally related to masculinity, such as strength, intelligence, fearlessness, and audacity. She is given many beatings throughout the story for numerous causes, including talking back to her husband, cutting some leaves off a tree to wrap food with, and making fun of Okonkwo's prowess with a gun. He recognizes her consistent fearlessness when he hears a bang on his door. The narrator explains, "he knew it must be Ekwefi; Of his three wives Ekwefi was the only one who would have the audacity to bang on his door" (Achebe 76). Ekwefi initially became attracted to Okonkwo after seeing him defeat Amalinze the Cat in a wrestling match, also a very masculine activity, though she did not marry him until a few years later, as Okonkwo was too poor to marry again at the time. They fathered at least ten children, though nine of them perished in infancy, leaving only Ezinma, who shares many of those same masculine traits, as Okonkwo recognizes when he says, "If Ezinma had been a boy I would have been happier; She has the right spirit" (Achebe 66). Their relationship is extremely close: the author describes it as "not only that of a mother and child" and  "there was something in it like the companionship of equals" (Achebe 77). Ekwefi lacks the crudeness and harshness of a man, which she makes up for in audacity and dedication, as shown when Ezinma is taken by the priestess Chielo by the command of the Oracle, Agbala. Though Okonkwo and another wife reassure Ekwefi that the child will be returned, Ekwefi follows Chielo despite the priestess telling her that it was against the will of the gods. After successfully following the priestess all the way to the Oracle's cave without being discovered, she finds Okonkwo who was trailing behind her, who relieves her by telling her that he will stay and wait for Ezinma,  and that she is free to go back home. After expressing her gratitude to Okonkwo, Ekwefi reminisces about when they first became a couple and all of their good memories, leading me to believe that just as Ezinma is Okonkwo's favorite daughter or possibly child, Ekwefi is Okonkwo's favorite wife.
