Mental Retardation – Intellectual Disability

2 Introduction Intellectual Disability (ID)- A term now used to define certain limitations a person may have in their mental functioning. The ability of a person’s brain to learn, think, solve problems, and make sense of the world (IQ below 70-75). Whether the person has the skills he or she needs to live independently (daily living skills). LIMITATIONS MAY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: communication skills self-help skills (hygiene, etc.) social skills

3 Causes of ID Genetic Conditions- abnormalities of chromosomes (46 chromosomes) and genes. Chromosome 1-44 are autosomes (they control the length of your arms, hair color, weight, height) 45 and 46 sex chromosomes (colorblindness, hemophilia, XX, XY). Other Genetic Conditions: Down syndrome, fragile X syndrome, phenylketonuria (PKU) – failure to metabolize.

4 Causes continued… Problems during pregnancy.
Perinatal Problems – problems during labor and birth (ex. Not enough air). Health problems- malnutrition or exposure to poisons like lead or mercury.

5 Adaptive Skills Behaviors that are used to adjust to specific situations. Self- management skills Limited self-control Repetitive Actions Communicate with others Personal needs Health and safety Knowing the rules of conversation

6 Percentages 1%-3% of our population is intellectually disabled. WOW! Currently there are 316,660,249 people in United States. WOW! Currently there are 7,110,847,256 in the World. @ 8:44 am 9/12/13EST 1 out of every 10 children with special needs has some form of ID. 85% - IQ  (Mild MR) 10 % - IQ  (Moderate MR) 3-4 %- IQ  (Severe MR) 1-2 % - IQ  under 20 (Profound MR)

7 Signs of ID Sit up, crawl or walk later than other children.
Learn to talk later, or have trouble speaking. Find it hard to remember things. Not understand how to pay for things. Have trouble understanding social rules. Having trouble seeing the consequences of their actions. Have trouble solving problems. Have trouble thinking logically.

8 Americans with Disabilities Act
A law that was enacted by Congress in It is a wide ranging civil rights law that prohibits, under certain circumstances, discrimination based on disability. It protects Americans with Disabilities, similarly as did the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

9 ADA- Public Transportation
