The process of urbanization has been going on for a long, long time on Earth. It began in four ancient River Valley civilizations

What has allowed for urbanization to occur?

5. Farming allowed people to develop food surpluses and changes in technology allowed people to store food.
These developments permitted population growth and resulted in the settlement of denser populations.
Food surpluses and larger populations enabled people to specialize because not everyone had to put their energy into food production. This spawned the development of new types of jobs in these agrarian, village-based societies.
New problems emerged as people lived in larger groups in settled villages. Social institutions changed and developed to respond to these changes and to address these new problems.

6. What was the industrial revolution?
Industrial Revolution -was marked by the economic change from an agricultural-based economy toward machine-based manufacturing.
Inventions and technological innovations created the factory system of large-scale machine production.
This led to greater economic specialization.
Why did the growth of factories contribute to urbanization????
factories created jobs and people from rural areas moved closer to the factories in the hope of finding jobs and perhaps a better life. The equipment create by the Industrial Revolution was used by farmers allowing them to use less workers and produce a surplus of food.

By the end of the 1940s, China had only 69 cities.
In 2007, it had 670 cities, almost ten times as many.
Increasing urbanization is the result of migration from villages, as well as natural increase, leading to the expansion of small towns which have been reclassified as cities.
Of these cities, 89 have a population of over a million, compared to 37 in the United States and 32 in India.

In 1950 there were only 2 megacities but by 2007 there were 19.
Many of the megacities in 2025 are in countries that are currently less developed countries.
China will have 4 megacities by 2025.
Tokyo, Japan continues to be the largest megacity by far.
In 2025, seven out of the ten largest megacities will be in Asia.
