1 Highland High Registration for incoming 9th graders.
Welcome to Highland High, Home of the Rams!

2 Welcome to our new 9th graders!
Today you will take home your course selection card. On Thursday you will bring it back all filled out! Between now and Thursday you will: Talk to your current teachers and get their signatures. Talk to your parents or guardians and get their signatures. Talk to your friends! You want to take classes together right?

3 What do I sign up for? Look to page two in our handy dandy course catalog. Read through the graduation requirements. Do you want to graduate? OF COURSE!!!!! Therefore you must consider a four year plan to meet all of your requirements. And? What do you think you might want to do with your future? Any career thoughts yet? Highland has lots of classes to help you meet career pathways.

4 There is even a CTE medallion you can earn.
If you complete a career pathway you can earn a CTE medallion that you wear at graduation!

5 So: what do freshman have to take?
Language Arts 9 (Regular or Honors)1 credit Math (Secondary Math 1 or 2, Regular or Honors) 1 credit Science (Regular or Honors), 1 credit Geography or AP Geography(.50 or 1 credit) PE Skills and Fitness for Life (1 credit)…..yes, everyone has to take this, no exceptions! (Even if you are an athlete) Computer Tech or Exploring Computer Science (.50)

6 What about a world language?
A world language is NOT a high school graduation requirement. However, most 4 year colleges want you to take two years of the SAME world language. (So, two years of Spanish, or French, or Arabic, or German) Many freshman therefore take a world language. But…you don’t have to.

7 How many credits do I sign up for?
8 Credits. It is like counting money. A full credit class is a “dollar”. Half credit classes are 50 cents. So if you pick a half year class you need to choose another to make that dollar. So you are choosing 8 dollars!

8 What are alternatives? You choose at least two alternatives. You don’t put these on the computer. These are just a safe guard in case you can’t get your first choice. 95 percent of our freshman get their first choice. However, if you don’t have an alternative down then we will pick your class for you!

9 Who signs my card? Your teacher, especially for honors and AP classes.
Your parents or guardian You! This is YOUR SCHEDULE, MAKE GOOD CHOICES!

10 What other classes do I need to know about?
Check out your course catalog for descriptions. It is also posted online. Certain classes such as weight training (Coach Benson) Cheerleading (Coach Jarratt), Play Productions need a signature from the teacher at Highland Release Time stands for Seminary (Religious instruction for the LDS faith) Be sure you are 15 and ½ to sign up for drivers ed.

11 When do I turn this in? We will be back on Thursday during your History class. You will input your course selections on the computers.

12 ONE CLASS CHANGE At Highland we allow you only one class change, either before school starts on class change day or at the semester. Why? Because what you choose is how we staff our building. We don’t want some classes to be really big and some to be really small. So…choose wisely! Some kids go all four years without a class change!

13 What are some other things I should think about?
Happy high school students are those who are involved! Choose something…..maybe……a sport?.....being in the musical?.....trying out for cheer?......joining a club?.....trying out for student government?.....singing in the choir?....playing in the band?.....get INVOLVED.

14 RANDOM FACTS What is our school mascot?
What time does school start and end? What is a block schedule? What are our school colors? Come to Ram Camp in August! WELCOME TO HIGHLAND HIGH!
