Course Objectives Participants will leverage their professional positions and expertise to educate property owners and managers about the benefits of voluntarily adopting smoke-free policies. Learners will identify available educational resources and partnerships that can be utilized by fire departments to educate the community about the importance of smoke-free living environments. Participants will engage community partners to provide a collaborative and engaging approach to educating property owners and managers about the advantages of smoke-free multi-unit housing policies.

History of Smoke-Free Multi-Unit Housing in America
2006 – Surgeon General states that there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. All exposure is harmful. 2010 – The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), the governing agency that sets the standard for indoor air quality, stated “the only means of effectively eliminating the health risk associated with indoor exposure is to ban the smoking activity”.

Boston Housing Authority - one of the largest housing authorities in the nation voluntarily implements smoke free policies for 100% of their properties. Implemented at the request of tenants. 2012 - over 250 HA voluntarily implemented smoke free policies

Related Companies - a national rental company with 40,000 rental units - went 100% smoke free. This is the largest public company to adopt SF policies portfolio wide. ASHRAE recommended that e-cigarettes also be removed from the indoor environment

HUD proposes all public housing to go smoke free HUD’s final rule to restrict smoking in public housing went into effect. All public housing must be smoke free by July 30th, 2018
