car industry - In 1941, more than three million cars were manufactured in the United States. Only 139 more were made during the entire war. In Ypsilanti, Michigan, the Ford Motor Company worked 24-hours a day. The average Ford car had some 15,000 parts. The B-24 Liberator long-range bomber had 1,550,000. A bomber came off the line every 63 minutes. ship building - Mobile became one of the busiest shipping and shipbuilding ports in the nation.

Waterbury, Connecticut: The Mattatuck Manufacturing Company switched from making upholstery nails to cartridge clips for the Springfield rifle, and soon was turning out three million clips a week. The American Brass Company made more than two billion pounds of brass rods, sheets and tubes during the war. The Chase Brass and Copper Company made more than 50 million cartridge cases and mortar shells, more than a billion small caliber bullets and, eventually, components used in the atomic bomb.

The camp itself, was built in Tennessee in It would become the home of the 12th, 14th, and 20th Armored Divisions. It was the HQ for the IV Armored Corps and the 26th Infantry Division. Today, it is home to the 101st Airborne.

14 World War II Oak Ridge (US 68)
Built by the Army Corps of Engineers in 1942, it was designed to be a major part of the Manhattan Project (the development of the atom bomb). The 2nd nuclear reactor was built here (the first was in Chicago). Video 10:07

A camp in Tullahoma made for training infantry, artillery, and engineers. It had 85,000 acres, An airfield was used to train B-24 bombers.

19 Camp Forrest General Patton brought the 2nd Armored Division here to train.

20 Camp Forrest In 1942, Camp Forrest became a POW camp. Because of the camp, Tullahoma’s population increased from 4,500 before the war to 75,000 at the end of it. Soldiers camped out in fields, and cars had to drive at night with their lights off.
